spent a relaxing day…

sun has been shining for the last few days… lovely as we have been dealing with many days of overcast skies for what seems like weeks…

while we were visiting in the living room the sun shone through and made a rainbow effect where it reflected on one of the stained glass angels that George made a number of years ago…

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/39f/43539991/files/2014/12/img_0020-0.jpg
looked beautiful and I was able to get a good picture after a few tries…

later in the afternoon it was clear that there is more light…

already the days are getting longer and that extra sunlight makes me very happy…

1000 days, beloved, big girl pants, Dreamdays, faucet, George

I have this app called Dreamdays on my phone… it counts up to and down from important dates…

today marks 1000 days since my beloved left this world… in four days it would have been his 66th birthday…

we went to Rona today to pick up a tile and a new faucet for the kitchen as the old one has been dripping for a few weeks…

IMG_9524.JPG
thankfully Jeff was able to replace it for me… don’t even think there was any cursing, lol…

when my chariot arrived, it even included a snow shoveler…

IMG_9523-0.JPG
for most of our years together George did all the shovelling, other than the few years his heart wouldn’t let him…

a thousand days seem like forever and a blink of an eye all at the same time… I’ve missed him every single one of those days…

George, hibiscus, poppy, remembering, snow

woke up to snow on the ground this morning…

snow on the ground...

snow on the ground…

when I went downstairs a red hibiscus was in full bloom and I could see the snow on the ground… reminded me of a poppy…

spent a good portion of the morning watching the Remembrance Day service from Ottawa…

remembering my mother and father and George’s father and their service to our country… neither my father or George’s ever talked about what they did…

my mom’s work involved removing or adjusting pictures of ships so that when they were published in newspapers anywhere in the world they wouldn’t be recognizable as a certain ship… she was heavily involved in having this statue designed and raised at the Legislative grounds… this picture was one I downloaded from the internet, and there was no information about who took it…

had a quiet day thinking of them and also George… his dad died just a few days before Remembrance Day which made the day very special for both of us…

big girl pants, bloomimg, full moon, George, hibiscus, scalloped potatoes

took this picture yesterday morning of a bud…

IMG_9193.JPG
the hibiscus tree has about 20 leaves on it… the rest fell off once the flowers bloomed the first few weeks after I brought it in…

full moon today… when we were driving to swimming the moon was huge above the trees… by the time we finished it had risen quite a bit higher, but was about half the size…

happily I had scalloped potatoes and ham for my supper, which my friend dropped off tonight… I cooked some snow peas to go along with it… these were the scalloped potatoes that our group had peeled and sliced for her family dinner after her brother’s memorial service last week… they were delicious… although there were lots of onions in them, her system of cutting the slices into small pieces infused the potatoes with the flavour but not great bits of onion…

this is the blossom tonight…

so happy to have blooming flowers in the house… George brought me orchids or other blooming plants often throughout the cold weather…

big girl pants, cleaning, dentist, George, insurance, mouth guard, teeth

thank goodness it is Friday…

had things on early three mornings in a row… today it was the dentist…

I do not like visiting the dentist, but I have gone every three to six months for the last 35 years… I had a few very bad experiences in my early twenties and made the decision to face my fear of dentists and be sure to get regular check-ups so I wouldn’t have to deal with any big issues…

lucky for me, my teeth are good, so I haven’t had too many problems…

unlike George… I think his teeth were made of marshmallow… he had at least two or three fillings in each of the teeth he had left… we do think we sent his dentist on a number of vacations over the years…

my insurance coverage from George’s work ran out in March and the new plan I was finally able to get doesn’t include dental… mainly because it was going to cost an additional hundred dollars a month and it seemed more sensible to just pay for my check-ups…

was quite worried that my front tooth might need a crown so was very happy to hear that the problem was staining from tea… hurray:-)…

unfortunately she did find a small cavity so I have to go back in a couple of weeks… I know she isn’t going to hurt me, but I will still be grasping the arms of the chair through the entire procedure…

have been wearing a mouth guard for a few years and will continue to, as it helps keep my teeth from grinding and wearing down the enamel…

IMG_8864.JPGhow lucky I am to have access to good dental care…

beloved, big girl pants, election, freedom, George, voting

since I was of age, I have voted in every election… and I have done it each and every time with my beloved…

we have an election next Wednesday… first one since George died…

I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it through the process, so I decided to do something different…

tonight when I got home from work, I walked over to the community club to vote in the Advance Poll… never done that before…

advised the man who put the ballots into the counting machine that I wanted to take a picture of the ballot as it went in…

IMG_8821.JPGhe was happy to take the picture and was rather excited that someone wanted their picture taken as they voted, lol…

we are so lucky to live in a country where we have the freedom to vote… sad that so many people don’t take advantage of it…

coneflowers, garden, George, sunflower, weeding, weeds

been missing George a lot lately… maybe it has to do with how bad the garden looks, lol…

haven’t done any weeding for weeks and haven’t touched the side garden all summer…

this sunflower has grown up from seeds tossed out of the feeder by the birds… George would never have let that happen… he spent time nearly every day weeding the various beds and they usually looked tidy…

wild sunflower...

wild sunflower…

of course, the purple coneflowers have survived since I planted them last year… George wasn’t here to pull them out as they popped through the soil in the spring… if you know this plant you will know that it does look similar to a weed… George would pull them out every spring after we had planted them the previous year…

purple cone flower...

purple cone flower…

it got to be a family joke…

just yesterday the little boys were asking me to read The Pink Giraffe to them and I couldn’t bear to… it was one of the last books he read to them before he died… maybe next time they ask I will be able to read it to them…

big girl pants, colours, dream, Fall, George, hurtling, leaves

on my way home Friday night I really noticed the changing colour of the leaves…

this picture shows the Virginia creeper in the garden… more and more red…

IMG_8319.JPGI’ve also noticed leaves coming down everywhere… besides yellow ones drifting down in the garden, I’ve noticed piles where they have dropped en masse under some trees…

the trees across the creek are looking beautiful as fall advances…

IMG_8320.JPG George and I used to take a drive on a Sunday in the fall to see the beautiful colours along the highway…

I don’t remember dreams, but lately I’ve been dreaming about him… woke up a few days ago thinking he was downstairs making breakfast… took a few minutes for my new reality to sink in…

IMG_8321.JPGmore colours looking out the windows… feels as though fall is hurtling towards us…

big girl pants, garden, geese, George, light, morning glory, sun

noticing every day how there is less light… waking up in the dark and needing to turn on the lights to get ready…

the sun is setting around eight so it is dark before you know it… less than thirteen hours of light each day…

the garden is struggling as well, what with the low temperatures… I check as soon as I get outside to see if any morning glories have braved the weather and bloomed…

IMG_8256.JPGI can’t see a morning glory without thinking of George counting how many were blooming each morning when I was in hospital for a six week period, and often bringing me a picture… sure do miss him…

IMG_8257.JPGhard to see, but this is a picture of some geese flying over first thing… the sound of their honking makes it clear that Fall is coming, lol…

IMG_8258.JPGfresh tomato with my chicken, potatoes and roasted garlic tonight… love popping something into the oven and napping while it cooks…

even with a persistent cold, life is good…

big girl pants, George, Rona, shoes, storage, Trones

had a quiet morning, taking it easy… then I cooked the meat for our taco supper…

kids picked me up and we went to Rona to get screws and anchors to hang up the shoe storage containers at the front door… still find it difficult to go there without seeing George… today one of the people helping us said I looked familiar, and when I said I was George’s wife, he said they still miss him… while we were out we ran a couple of errands, got home and finished the prep for dinner while Jeff put up the units…

IMG_8233.JPGJeff figured out how to give me access to the plug through the first bin… still have to put a board across the top to finish it off…

IMG_8234.JPGthe front area looks great and I got most of the shoes in and put a couple aside to give away… think I will hang scarves in front of these…
