adventure, appreciate good health, birthday celebration, BSers, completely over surgery, stuck in the ruts, thanks be

my friend picked me up and we headed out to get another friend before meeting the other BSers at a local restaurant for a birthday celebration lunch…

for a number of years we would purchase a gift for the birthday person and it became a very difficult process as we really all have everything we need or want…  so it has moved to doing whatever the birthday person would like to do, and usually includes eating out…

we were celebrating two birthdays because we hadn’t been able to make up our minds about what we would like to do or find a time…

on our way we drove up a street one over from our friend’s house and ended up in front of a woman in a van who got stuck in the ruts on the street…  right now many streets have deep ruts due to all the snow we’ve had lately…

the snow is above the heron's belly... first time ever...

the snow is above the heron’s belly… first time ever…

we sat and waited a few minutes as she struggled to get her vehicle out, but between the ruts, her lack of skill and the car parked behind her, she was having a rough time… finally we got out and went to help…  she was a young mom with at least 2 kids in the car… we tried directing and pushing the van as she tried to move it, but we weren’t quite strong enough… eventually a neighbour came out and he actually lifted the van as we pushed, and we finally got it moved…  it was quite the adventure…

once again it made me appreciate that I am completely over my surgery and well enough to be able to push a van with no side effects…

thanks be…

very full day…

anxiety, busy day, cartoons, cleaned fish tank, coming anniversary, commemorate, George's death, lunch out, purse party, sleep over, snowboarding

wow, been quite a day…

the kids all slept over last night and the adults headed off for a couple of days of snowboarding around eight this morning…

cleaning the tank...

cleaning the tank…

the little boys spent the morning with me and we cleaned the fish tank – something they always did with Grandpa, fed the fish, read books, did a puzzle and watched cartoons…

after which we fed them...

after which we fed them…

they were picked up just after noon and I headed out for a birthday lunch with my BS buddies…  we had a lovely time after which I went to a purse party with one of the group…  we had to head out of the city for about half an hour and it was a good day for a drive…

we shopped and had lots of fun and returned home slightly poorer, but with some very nice items ordered…

once home, I headed to bed for a nap because the littlest boy was up a few times during the night and I had a very difficult time getting to sleep… and of course waking up at 6:30 didn’t help either, lol…

I had thought that the coming anniversary of George’s death wasn’t going to be that difficult to deal with, but my level of anxiety has been rising since yesterday… I am not looking forward to Tuesday, but also want to commemorate George’s passing…

last year's February sleep-over...

last year’s February sleep-over…

I hope that the next few days will be filled with calm and happy memories…

family sleepover, kind of empty, miss George, sounding board, ticked me off, vented

a few days ago I was told something that really ticked me off…  what I needed was to talk the matter over with someone – that would have been George…  made me realize how much I miss him…  I would have vented, he would have made all the appropriate noises, or said something about how dumb the situation was and got all mad about it, wanting to protect me, but not knowing exactly how to do that…

I wasn’t able to talk the situation over with anyone and it really ate at me… finally I was able to get another person’s opinion and then let it go…

another example of some of the simplest but most important things that are now in a deep empty place…

the house is full tonight, with a family sleepover, as the big kids plan to leave the little kids here in the morning and head out for some snow boarding…

lonesome tulip...

lonesome tulip…

but it also feels kind of empty…

Corolla, email, tested 2013, Woodhaven Toyota

went to Woodhaven Toyota a few weeks ago… they had sent out an email to owners of 2010 Corollas advising they needed them to sell and would give a great deal…

took my daughter and met with a young man who got us into the 2013 Corolla S, for a test drive… it was fine, but not that different from my current car…

their numbers weren’t that great, basically they were going to give $1500 towards   a credit or new vehicle lease…  the last time we were there, they were able to lower our payments and give us a newer vehicle… not so much this time…  the other piece of information I learned was that my lease, which I thought was up this year,  isn’t up until 2014…

he also advised that my car would be worth less because it had been in an accident – when George had his heart attack he drifted over the curb and into a fence… this piece of information kind of made me mad, because when I went in to have the lease changed from George’s name to mine, and I asked about it, the fellow I spoke with advised that the accident wouldn’t change the value of the car at all…  they also didn’t seem to feel that the 16,000 mileage was a selling benefit…

stock shot of the car...

stock shot of the car…

I thought about what they had to say and have decided they don’t really want my 2010 that bad, and I will keep it until the lease is up…

beautiful moon, moon set, start the day, wonderful treat

had a wonderful time early this morning watching the moon set…

was ready for work early and was sitting checking out Facebook when I looked up and saw a beautiful moon…  I took the next twenty minutes to dig out my tripod, set it up and get some great shots as it went down…

just going below the trees.

just going below the trees.

it always amazes me how quickly the moon appears to move… at night, in the hot tub I can tell how long I’ve been out just by watching where the moon is in the sky…

through the trees...

through the trees…

I hadn’t taken any shots out the back when it was at its peak the night before…

going down...

going down…

what a wonderful treat to start the day…

bird feeder, chirping, feathered friends, five goldfinches, haircut, hot tub, Parrot, shells, tweeting, walked, Yucatan Jay

tonight I walked part way home after getting a much needed haircut…as I walked along the sidewalks in the warm sunshine, I could hear birds chirping and tweeting to one another…  it was lovely to realize how close spring is…

as I was sitting in the hot tub a few minutes ago I was looking at the bird feeder… there were no birds as it was already dark, but there is lots of proof that they have been here… the ground is covered with shells from sunflower seeds…

it reminded me of the amazing sight this summer of the five goldfinch males at the feeder at the same time…

the fifth one was around back...

and also of some of the cool birds we saw in Mexico…

flowers, forgotten, morning glories, orchids, poignant, poppies, scattered pictures, special event, The Way We Were, wonderful life

on Saturday I took some time at the computer to gather pictures of flowers as I have been asked for some by a friend who wants to decorate her new space with a number of framed photos…

water lily and wasp at the park in 2011...

water lily and wasp at the park in 2011…

it was a lovely hour or so that I spent going through all the pictures taken in 2012 and 2013 and copying the flower shots into a folder…  apparently, I really like morning glories, poppies and orchids…  on Sunday we went through the 600 pictures that I had moved and she chose a hundred that will need to be sifted through…

after she left on Sunday I spent another hour or so doing the same thing with 2011 pictures…  found another 500 or so…  she has those now to sort through as well…

one of the things that I have found about writing posts for my blog is that I have taken the time to find pictures that have come to my mind as I write…  some of them have been easy to find, and others have taken a bit of digging, and along the way I have discovered many pictures that I had completely forgotten about…

I have come across a number of my BS group… often when we go out for a special event we will have a picture taken of all of us…  it is fun to remember where we were and what we were doing when the photos were taken…  it has made me think I need to do some cross-filing by group as well as date…

birthday celebration November 2011...

birthday celebration November 2011…

tonight we had a good visit although it felt a bit poignant to me as we only have one more gathering before one of us leaves to work in another city… she will be returning home every other weekend but we won’t all be together on Monday nights for quite some time… we have done this before when one of us moved to the States for a few years but being on the phone isn’t the same as being in the same room…

so, now another half hour has gone by as I searched for just the right pictures to add into this post, lol…

the words to The Way We Were by Marvin Hamlisch have been running around in my head since last night’s Oscar performance by Barbra Streisand…

what a wonderful life I lead…

best french fries, big girl pants, breakfast at the Park Cafe, English Garden, memories, memory stones

has been a full weekend… this morning I walked over to Assiniboine Park for breakfast with a friend… I left early because I wanted to get some shots of the gorgeous hoarfrost on the trees…

hoarfrost along the walking path...

hoarfrost along the walking path…

whenever I go there, I remember what fun George and I had when we went for breakfast most Sundays from the time the Park Cafe opened… usually I would walk over and he would drive and we would meet up for a date together and talk about the week and the kids… we enjoyed watching the ducks, or the “zamboni” cleaning the ice for the skaters… we liked to read the memory stones as we walked along the path and often, when the weather was nice, we would walk through the English Garden… the host knew us and often found us a specially good table where we would have a lovely view… then we would drive home together, and often I would take pictures while George would spot something that I should capture…

as we left the restaurant this morning, we walked along the path where two memory stones refer to our family…

later in the day I made french fries for the first time since George died… he always made the best french fries and we would often have pickerel and french fries on Tuesday night when I would get home from swimming… I have not had the heart to make them, until today… those big girl pants…

lovely memories…

BSers, delicious, dream, felt his presence, limo ride, lovely evening, party, personal chef and sous chef, preparations

my young chef friend was over last night to make sure I had the right pans, and that the oven was big enough for her needs…  this is very exciting as we prepare for the dinner party… there will be 9 of us for the first time, but I am so looking forward to the event…

we have had lots of variety in these annual dinners but this is the first time we’ve been treated to a professional chef in one of our homes… my treat was to have everyone picked up and taken home in a limo…

everyone arrived in the limo...

everyone arrived in the limo…

I woke up in the middle of the night from a dream about the event – although in the dream George was still alive, but the limo was involved… I was freaking out because everyone was on their way in the lovely vehicle and I realized that I hadn’t purchased any food for the dinner, lol…

tidying and setting the table took a good portion of my day, and then the house was ready:  a BSer had dropped off tulips to add to the festivities,  the chef and sous chef (my daughter) arrived and the house smelled divine…  I even had time for a glass of wine…

table ready for dinner...

table ready for dinner…

then the group arrived, and we began our evening with a Pimm’s Cup cocktail which another BSer brought… we moved to the dining room and enjoyed a five course meal which was delicious…  what a treat it was for all of us to be waited on by these young women…

menu for the dinner...

these are very special people in my life and it was good to be together… I had moved the table up to the window so that no one sat in George’s place, but I felt his presence throughout the evening…

lots of conversation...

lots of conversation…

he would have been the consummate host, making sure everyone was comfortable and had enough to eat and drink… he would have talked with every person who was here and provided laughter throughout…

beautiful tulips which were at the head of the table...

what a lovely evening…

anniversary of his death, dinner conversation, flashbacks, funeral, garbage, payday dinner, The Next Place, words affect others

exciting news…  they did pick up the garbage but did not leave a response to my note… yay…

it was quite the day…  while I was at work this morning, my son-in-law came to shovel out the driveway and let me know that the garbage people really did pick-up…

my daughter and I went to the service for our neighbour’s son which filled a banquet hall and where the minister read from a great book titled The Next Place which brought tears to my eyes…  this is the second funeral I’ve attended since George’s death and both have brought flashes of the days following his death to mind…

The Next Place

The Next Place

at supper tonight (payday dinner!) we were talking about how we are each reacting to the upcoming anniversary of his death… my younger daughter is having flashbacks to all of the events starting with the phone call she received from me… she remembers a comment that I made that I didn’t remember at all, until she mentioned it… shows how one’s words can affect others even though those words are completely gone from your own memory… my grandson is also thinking of Grandpa a lot… I am finding these days to be less stressful than the Valentine’s day run-up…

while we were having our supper, across the street our friend and neighbour was having her kids for supper as well… made me wonder about their dinner conversation…

although, after the kids left just before eight, I laid down and woke up around one in the morning, lol…

sun going down tonight...
