big girl pants, elders, memories, thanksgiving, traditions, turnip

for the last few days I’ve been preparing for tonight’s dinner…

this year I made two new things… the first was the dressing that my grandson wanted… apparently there wasn’t enough sausage in it so he didn’t like it…

the second was a turnip puff… a friend wrote about it in a blog and it sounded interesting so I checked it out on Pinterest, liked the look of it, and made some… two of us really liked it, the other not so much… my mom and dad felt that gravy just wasn’t great without turnip water in it, so I’ve cooked turnips as part of our celebration dinners for at least thirty years…

had a good time setting the table… included plates and bowls from our elders…

IMG_8816-1.JPGduring dinner we talked about the various items and where they came from…

had also put one of the candelabras from Crystal and Jeff’s wedding on the table… during dinner we thought of people who were missing – those who’ve moved on from this world and those who are just not close by – and we lit the candles as we thought of them…

before dinner the boys went out to find some leaves to go on the plate with the pumpkin… then they spent some time tree climbing…

thanks…

big girl pants, blessed, elders, flowers, food, thanks, thanksgiving

spent a quiet day doing things around the house…

realized again how blessed I am… able to do whatever I want…

IMG_8765.JPGenjoying the beautiful flowers as I was working on the dining room table for Monday’s dinner…

able to have all the food we want for our Thanksgiving celebration… dug out a chicken from the freezer, got turnip, potatoes and squash in the last few days…

have the time and items to make the table special… pulled out dishes that had belonged to our elders to bring them to the dinner…

tonight I made myself a steak… cooked it in a frying pan with help from Gordon Ramsey… well a video online, lol… it was delicious…

elders, hours in hospitals, playing cards, Rummy, tough times

a few folks I know are going through tough times with their elders… I’ve been thinking of them a lot… I remember how hard those times were… hours in hospitals where conversation seems to run out…

this morning at an event we had, we used playing cards…

brought to mind the hours and hours that our family played cards while sitting with my mother in hospital as she was in her final months of life….

the girls remember too I think… we would play rummy for hours at a time… there isn’t a whole lot you can do in the hospital and it helped pass the time… also gave us some fun – including mom as we took turns winning and losing…

over the years we’ve played cards in many a hospital room as well as in living rooms of our loved ones…

not sure if my little boys even know how to play cards… will have to work on that with them…

big girl pants, elders, enjoy the moments, life is short, palliative care, parents, spend time

have spent some time recently thinking about parents…

remembering that time in our lives when we were dealing with kids and parents who needed our support, and how difficult that was…

my dad died in 1988 and my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer about six months later… at the time I wasn’t working and so was able to spend the last four months of her life with her daily in the palliative care ward at Princess Elisabeth Hospital… a very difficult time but also amazing for me… my mom and I had not been close until after my dad’s death and those days we spent were wonderful and we got to really learn about each other…

it reminded me then, and has since then, how important it is to spend the time with your parents or significant family friends… life is so short, and you can’t get that time back…

I wonder how it is for my kids… if they are happy to spend time with me or if it is a chore they feel required to do…

our elders taught us so much… I think of the life lessons George and I learned from ours… his dad and mom, my parents, our dear friend Margaret…

we were blessed with time and the realization that the time with them was so special… even when some of the times were difficult…

enjoy the moments with your elders…

here are my Mom and Dad
