it was beautiful this morning and I was very excited to open the screen door for the first time this year…

sadly my son-in-law was working days this weekend so I knew he couldn’t come and help me in the garden…

called my grandson and he and a friend came over and spent the day… they raked the garden and put out furniture while I cleaned up the planters from last year and washed a number of tables… then we moved to the front where we cut back wild roses… got rid of grass…   

laid wet newspaper, and put down 16 bags of rubber mulch… 

was so happy to get this done… bought the first ten bags of mulch last summer… ran over and got more as we worked… slurpees for the boys on our way home from Home Depot, a short rest and they then spent a couple of hours working on the pond…  they had lots of fun…

the little boys arrived just before 5 and they trimmed the Virginia creeper…

had a short visit from my sister-in-law and nephew in the tidied garden…

had pizza for supper when the daddy arrived and he changed my tires so now the car has the pretty wheels on it again…

everyone headed home and I am laying on the bed watching tv…

opened the screen door at 8:30 in the morning and closed it twelve hours later… yay…

busy, warm and very productive day…

this morning as I was waiting for my ride I topped up the water in the fish tank… it’s been low for a week or so and every time I am leaving the house I remember that it needs water…

when it is low, the running water is very loud…

took a number of trips back and forth to the sink but other than the one time I poured the water all over myself and the floor there were no issues… got it all done in time…

the fish like it when it’s full too… they are good company for me… next will be giving the front of the tank a cleaning… algae is starting to take over, lol…

been a very long week…

had a lovely treat tonight when I got to have dinner with my grandson after he came over and shovelled the driveway…

we ordered beef bones, baked potatoes and Caesar salad from Tony Roma’s… I just love Mobile Maitre D and Skip the Dishes… by the time I get home I do not want to go out again to fetch dinner so these are great ways to get the food I want delivered to the house… picking up our dinner was George’s job…

this morning I took this picture of the fresh snow on the ground… the window acted like a mirror and so the living room was clear as well…

busy day and when I got home my grandson arrived to clear that snow…

he stayed for dinner and then headed home… on his way to the bus his dad turned up, on his way home from work, and gave him a ride… that made me happy because it is cold out there…

too chilly to hot tub and I am missing my time out there…

still searching for a good app to keep track of my blood sugar and what I have been eating… the ones I’ve looked at have very complicated food records so I will keep searching…

looked outside this morning and saw such beauty…

everything had been covered with a blanket of light fluffy snow…

luckily I didn’t need to leave home… always so much more beautiful if you don’t have to go out in it, lol…

this afternoon my grandson came over and shovelled the sidewalk, driveway and back path…

he did a good job and then came in for hot chocolate while we waited for his mom to pick him up, when she got off work…

a friend stopped by a few hours later and there was more snow on the ground… we went out for supper and while we were visiting the wind was blowing the snow around…

wonder what it is going to look like in the morning…

quite a busy evening for me, lol…

put something into the oven after I got home, and headed upstairs for a nap…

heard a quiet ring and decided to go see if there was someone at the door… and discovered my grandson who has been hired by my Ottawa kids to shovel for me…

he had taken the bus from school and had a fair walk as he might have been on the wrong bus… after he warmed up for a few minutes he shovelled… not too much snow had come down, but it had swirled around a bit…

once he finished, I made him some hot chocolate and we had a visit before he headed off to catch a bus home…

what a lovely Christmas gift, clean walks and visits with a special young man…

had my supper and napped a tiny bit… my BS friends arrived just after eight and we had an excellent time catching up… we hadn’t met for a few weeks…

while we were sitting there, cars were coming and going on the street and people were getting in and out of them… then more cars were in the lane, and finally people were walking along the creek with flashlights… bizarre… it will be interesting to hear about what was going on…

all was quiet when everyone left…

fish are happy and the tank is finally clear…

when I was at the kids’ place on Friday my youngest grandson gave me a recipe for dressing that he wanted me to make for Thanksgiving dinner…

this is very odd because he doesn’t eat dressing, or much else, unless it is Caesar salad and baked potatoes…

they had all worked on this recipe at daycare and he ate three plates full of it… he asked them to write down the recipe and they also sent a note saying how much he liked it…

how could I not make it…

I did laugh because while he was telling me about the recipe my daughter was shaking her head no the entire time… she loves my dressing and has never liked when I have made different versions… luckily the version he was wanting is made as a casserole…

so, two types of stuffing made, potatoes, turnips and cauliflower cut and ready…

still need to finish setting the table…

started the day in the garden… two blossoms on the hibiscus and you can see what a beautiful morning it was…

the sounds in the garden were lovely, there were chickadees and goldfinches at the feeder, while the water was falling in the pond…

shortly after that, the nail guns took over as my neighbour was having his roof shingled, lol… caught one of the chickadees, which is difficult as they are very fast…

spent a good portion of the day getting the required groceries and making spinach dip and five pounds of potato salad for the big birthday party… mom loves the spinach dip, and dad the potato salad…

our oldest grandson turned fourteen… cannot believe that fourteen years have passed since he arrived in our lives… he is a lovely young man and George and I both enjoyed watching him as he has grown… George would be very proud… I know I am…

today the littlest guy turned five… can’t believe it… his mom is away on a trip right now, so the guys were having a boys fun weekend…

we chatted on FaceTime this morning at which time he advised me that he wanted homemade hamburgers and salad for supper… our family tradition is that you get to choose your dinner… all very nice except his daddy and I had been planning ham for dinner, lol…

they came over just after lunch time and he, his daddy and I went shopping for the birthday dinner ingredients…

he decided he was riding underneath the cart, and seeing as it was just the three of us, we didn’t complain, and his method of travel brought smiles to the faces of most of the people who passed us, lol…

we spent quite a bit of time in the Bakery section while he examined every cake and finally made a decision… based completely on the strawberries on top…

once we got home all the boys headed out for a birthday hot tub and I started working on supper, although Jeff had already made the burgers… the interesting thing about all of this is that the little guy has been going through a no meat phase…

we had barbequed burgers, with cheese and lettuce, homemade French fries and salad… the French fries were definitely not up to Grandpa’s standards and we discussed what he might have done differently that made his so good… our other special treat was chocolate milk that we picked up while we were out…

then we had the cake, which looked way prettier than it tasted, lol…

here’s what I wrote last year on his birthday…

this year I was thinking about the turmoil in my work situation when he was born, and how within weeks of his birth I was out of work… at the time it was tremendously stressful… although, had that not happened, I wouldn’t be working at the wonderful place I am now..

ups and downs in the journey…
