this morning there were 9 morning glories…

made me think about my Mom and the amazing days we spent together during her last four months…

she died within a year of my Dad… they were such a couple… always together, always doing things to support the other… I don’t believe I ever heard either of them raise their voice to the other…

my Dad looked after my Mom from the time my brother was born until I was about fifteen or so… when he was born she had a breakdown and spent many years struggling with her health… she would often spend six months of the year in hospital while Dad looked after us and visited her regularly…

she was on large doses of Valium so even when she wasn’t in the hospital she was pretty drugged up… she decided one day that she was getting off the meds and stopped cold-turkey… she improved amazingly after that…

then Dad’s emphysema gave him a very hard time and Mom took over looking after him… we both did, really… when I turned sixteen we bought a car together and I drove Dad to and from work every day until he took an early retirement… as he got weaker and could do less, Mom stepped up her care and before he finally went into hospital, she was doing everything for him…

true love is an amazing thing to behold… I got to see it with my parents, and experience it with my beloved…

sometimes I am amazed that I have lived so long without George… somehow I thought we would ride off into the sunset together…

Mom and Dad enjoyed our garden and the flowers… although for most of the early years our garden was a playground for little people… they would be part of breakfasts and barbecues on the deck…

they would have enjoyed the morning glories, and the pond… I remember them telling me about my grandpa on my dad’s side who had an amazing garden filled with beautiful roses…

big girl pants, breakfast at the "A", fresh beets, George, goldfinch, kept house cool, laughter and lazing, my beloved, planted, red=winged blackbird, running and rolling, squirrels, without air conditioning, wonderful memories

got up at eight with the boys… they had cereal on the deck and we discussed our plans for the morning… decided to see if Daddy wanted to meet us for breakfast at the “A”… then we watered the new sod and some plants before everyone but me got bored… cartoons for them and tea on the deck for me… we did spot a goldfinch and some squirrels in the garden…

before we knew it, it was time to head over for breakfast… as we walked down the back lane by the toboggan hills I thought of George walking along holding their hands just a few years ago and how excited they were to be with him…

they ran up the hill and rolled down on our way to breakfast… lots of laughter and even spotted a red-winged blackbird for me… if you move through the pictures fast enough you can almost see the motion… should have taken a video, lol…

after breakfast – Mommy came too – they headed home and I had a little lay down… then did some planting and rested for most of the day…

tested out not using the air conditioning and kept the house cool by closing windows when the sun was shining on them… worked very well…

had a lovely dinner of pickerel with fresh beets and greens and potato salad… again was thinking how much George loved beets…

I have wonderful memories of my beloved…

what a day…

blue blanket, by phone, commemorate this day, complete a project, FaceTime, I am a bit purple-crazy, milkshakes, purple-y, shirtless, shovelling, snow blowing, solidarity, special things about Grandpa, touching moment, wearing purple, what a day, wonderful memories

this morning, as I sat at my desk trying to stay composed, my colleagues all gathered around my desk, and before they could say anything I was crying…  they were all wearing something purple, from clothing to pieces of jewellery… one had on a blue top which reminded me of how she mentally holds people in a blue blanket when they are in need of prayer…

colleagues each wearing at least one purple item…

now you don’t see many pictures of me, but I am a bit purple-crazy… I nearly always wear something purple – have purple highlights in my hair, purple glasses, shoes, jackets, tops, etc, etc…

I was wearing a new top that one of them had given me the day before and she shared the story of going to one of her favourite stores and telling them she was looking for a purple top to wear for this day at work… everyone in the store went on a hunt to find her just the right piece of clothing, and then found something for me as well… and to top it off they gave her a bag of purple jewellery, in case someone didn’t have anything purple…  so now I have a collection of purple jewellery at my desk for days when people have a need to be purple-y…

it was a lovely gesture of solidarity on the part of my colleagues… I already knew that they were all thinking of me… it was a touching moment…

my kids picked me up from work and we stopped to get milkshakes to have with our dinner… George did enjoy a good milkshake… while we was warming up the leftover roast chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing – and pepperoni pizza – a couple of the boys were outside snow blowing and shovelling…

Cyndi joined us by FaceTime from Calgary and we all had roast chicken leftovers for dinner… Ron joined us after we were finished by phone from Courtenay…  we gathered in the living room and remembered special things about Grandpa…

everyone would have given anything to have had him with us… we remembered his grumbling, playing in the garden without a shirt, cleaning up after dinner, snow blowing and shoveling, the way he could figure out exactly what was needed to complete a project, and just having him to talk with…  some could barely talk…

it was a wonderful collection of memories, and a great way to commemorate this day…
