electronic picture frame, funny, Grandpa Playlist, humour, random shuffle, shared, special

I’m sitting here in the living room watching the Kodak Pulse electronic picture frame… it has pictures I’ve put on it, as well as ones that others have emailed directly to it… it has a very random shuffle and sometimes I won’t see a picture for ages and then might see it three or four times in rapid succession…

I often look up and see George looking at me through two coasters, or maybe they are napkin rings, from a visit with Cyndi and Ron a couple of years ago…  it is a very funny picture and certainly reminds me of the humour that George shared with me and everyone else he connected with…

perfect example of George's wonderful silliness...

perfect example of George’s wonderful silliness…

recently a friend put up pictures on Facebook of her dogs with hats on, and it made me laugh, remembering all the times that George would go crazy with whatever hats happened to be around…

we have put lots of pictures of George onto the frame and when the boys are over we often go to the Grandpa Playlist so they can see Grandpa and we can remember the stories that went along with the pictures…

he was so funny… what  special man he was…

a new day, Christmas Crackers, first footing, good luck, great dinner, moments to savour, traditions

woke up happy this morning… a new year with much to anticipate and wonderful moments to savour…

I spent a lovely hour or so setting the table with all the fancy stuff – silver pheasant salt and pepper shakers that my mother brought to my grandmother when she returned from the war, chargers that Cyndi and Ron searched out just before they left Winnipeg, a flower plate that Ron gave me, beautiful salad dishes that George and I purchased many years ago… it was lovely to choose them and set the table in all its finery… I also added Christmas Crackers as that was a new tradition that Cyndi started, so it was a way to have both she and Ron at the table with us…

table all set...

table all set…

I was thinking back to one of our family’s New Year traditions – first footing… for us, it meant that at midnight on New Year’s Eve my dad, who had dark hair, would jump in the car and drive around to all our aunts and uncles and grandparents’ houses and take them an offering – it always included coal, bread and sometimes oranges and a little drink of something…  I also remember how my dad would have to search out new coal every year because no one ever kept it from year to year…

for many years I was the first footer, as my hair was darker than George’s… and then our kids started to follow the tradition for us, but usually just when they would arrive for dinner on New Year’s Day…  this year Tavin and I made a plan that he would be the one to act as the first footer… we put together a bag with coal (which the girls, George and I gathered along the shore of PEI or the Bay of Fundy and have carefully saved), an orange, and a tiny bottle of Baileys…  he took the bag home with him on Sunday when they were here…  on Monday they stopped by and when we shopped we bought a few buns, which I recommended they add to the bag…

today, before they left home, he reminded his parents’ about the bag and was sure they added the buns to it…

first footing goodies...

first footing goodies…

when they arrived here, he was very proud to be the first one to cross the threshold and bring his grandma good luck for the new year…

when I Googled first footing, it mentioned that it usually happened right after midnight, so I was giggling thinking how we have made a slight variation on the tradition, but I am also thrilled with how special it made Tavin feel…  I also laughed because I didn’t take a picture, even though I had thought I would write about this…

we had a lovely time together and enjoyed a great dinner…

ready to gobble up the wonderful dinner...

we are now counting down the days until we leave for Mexico…

barbecue, big girl pants, cancer, death of my beloved, fairly good day, family vacation, fireworks, healthy, love and laughter, new traditions, precious moments, rough year, sad, saying farewell, steak and lobster, surgery

today was fairly good… I had an early hot tub, even though it was minus thirty-four or some such thing, because I just had to have one last one in 2012… the boys came over, Jeff added water to the hot tub, and we went grocery shopping…

usually on New Year’s Eve, George would have barbecued steak and lobster for dinner… as the kids were having a party, I decided we should have the special dinner tomorrow night, so no one would have to do any rushing around… George would barbecue on a regular basis and I miss that… I am going to have to put on those big girl pants and do it myself one of these days…

while we were out I bought some nice stuffed scallops, fresh asparagus and mushrooms for my supper…  I anticipated that the evening would be a little sad, but didn’t really feel like being around partying people…

this year's New Year's Eve dinner...

this year’s New Year’s Eve dinner…

had my dinner and have just been watching the fireworks which our Community Club has on New Year’s Eve…  often we would be watching TV and one of us would hear the sound, and we would stand together in the dining room watching them out the window…  tonight I did that on my own…

fireworks through the window...

fireworks through the window…

I am saying farewell to a rough year, and trying hard to look toward the excitement and new things that will be 2013… I look forward to tomorrow and starting new traditions with my family… fancy dinner on New Year’s Day… family vacation… who knows what else…

I have come through the death of my beloved, a cancer diagnosis, big surgery and a long recovery…  now I am healthy and surrounded by people who care about me… I continue to be blessed…

if I awake at midnight I will toast my beloved, the past and coming year, and maybe speak with my girls… if not, I will start the new year in the morning with a smile…

may your New Year be filled with precious moments and much love and laughter…

brunch, catch up, Christmas tree, enjoyed each moment, friends, hugged someone, moving forward, tough times

another lovely relaxing day…

got up, had some tea and watched a bit of TV… then I put on a few layers of clothing and headed over to the Park to meet some great women for brunch… enjoyed Eggs Benedict and wonderful conversation…

yummy Eggs Benedict at The Park Cafe...

yummy Eggs Benedict at The Park Cafe…

hadn’t seen these good women for quite a while, and was glad to be able to catch up on their lives… we have all gone through some tough times and compared this year’s Christmas stories…   I miss George enormously, but I shared how I can decide to do something, and I don’t have to get anyone else’s input – this can be a benefit sometimes…

bridge through the trees...

on my way home I stopped and took a few pictures, and although it was overcast they came out fairly well… a few of them were of a favourite tree in the Park that we love to enjoy during the various seasons…

Crystal and the boys came over for supper and we had a good time, particularly when we got to eat some more of the demolished chocolate Christmas tree… I also got to hug someone I hadn’t seen for a while…

life is amazingly good, and today I enjoyed each moment…

alcohol, big girl pants, cheating, difficult, Fazes, guilt, Kobo, learning, missed, questions, reading, Saturday chores, Technology

had a lovely day… did a few Saturday chores around the house, and went to get my hair purpled… interesting how some things are fine for me to do and other require the big girl pants… I missed George today because he could always see the purple better than I could, and would let me know how it looked…

fresh for the New Year and Mexico...

fresh for the New Year and Mexico…

started reading a new book and played with the TV a bit…

I am learning to use the PVR, sort of… it was just installed a few weeks ago and when the person showed me how it worked, it all seemed very straightforward, but it seems a bit more difficult now, than it appeared then…

lots of buttons to choose from...

lots of buttons to choose from…

I do love technology, and have been learning a few tricks on how to work it all… I have finally got it so that only the channels I actually have come up in the menu, which is quite lovely…  I have also programmed all the HD channels I have…  we won’t talk about the number of questions that my 12 year old grandson and family have answered lately, lol…

I have PVRed two programs on purpose, and one completely by mistake, and I still haven’t figured out how to stop it from taping that series every time it is on, but I’ll figure it out, sooner or later…

this would have driven George crazy, because he would have left all the channels on the menu and scrolled for ages to get through everything… he would also have fiddled with it until it worked…

a little while ago I had a lovely glass of Harveys Bristol Cream, and poppycock (which my friend made me for Christmas) while reading the book I started at Fazes today… I am reading it using Kobo on my iPhone and it is going very well… for the last while before I changed to the iPhone, I wasn’t able to use Kobo on my Blackberry, so I am very happy about this…

for a few years we didn’t have any alcohol in the house as George wasn’t able to drink due to his heart condition, and sometimes I feel like I am cheating on him when I have a glass of something, but tonight I was able to enjoy the treat, without any guilt…

step in the right direction, I guess…

beloved, headache, migraine, preparing, quiet, trip

been a quiet few days… spent one day in the house, tidying and putting presents away…

next day I took the decorations off the Norfolk Pine, as another one fell and broke overnight… I also went out to have my eye looked at, got a flu shot, stopped for prescriptions at the drug store, and had my hair cut… I am enjoying the time away from work and look forward to the next few days of quiet as well…

I picked up a few items we might need in Mexico, and began collecting things in one spot to go into the suitcase…

starting collection for the suitcase...

starting collection for the suitcase…

I am looking forward to spending time with all my kids in a warm and relaxing environment…  George would have been so happy that we were taking a family trip…  I am sure his spirit will be with us…

today have had a pounding headache since this afternoon… wondering if it is from the flu shot…

went shopping with the kids… wandered through Ikea, and then picked up a shovel at Rona – took them some chocolates and nuts… George would have liked that…

since then I have been laying on the bed, trying to get over the headache… been a long time since I have had one… makes me think back to the years when I suffered from migraine on a regular basis, luckily not the real serious ones, but debilitating, nonetheless…

George would look after me, doing the little things he could to help… filling the bathtub with hot water, bringing cold cloths for my head… dealing with the girls…

tonight I think I will go out for a hot tub and remember my beloved…

dinner and decorating, grandma, love, memories, mom, ornaments, recipe, sugar cookies, traditions

had a lovely evening out the other night… was invited for dinner and decorating with a young friend whose partner works away… we had a wonderful time decorating the tree and a few other spots in the living room, between snacks, dinner, and drinks… it is always fun to see what others have for decorations and learn traditions they follow…

tree once we were done...

tree once we were done…

it reminded me of all the years where the girls and I would prepare ornaments to hang on the tree, which we would then give to guests as they left our home… we made a wide variety of things over the years, often using cookie cutters and play dough, cinnamon and applesauce, or actual sugar cookies that we would recommend not be eaten… at some point I got kind of lazy and began hanging candy canes, which would then be offered to guests as they left…

I brought a few sugar cookies that I had made and she was commenting on how wonderful they tasted… I can’t even think how many I have made, not so much recently, but over the years while the girls were in school, every occasion meant that sugar cookies would be taken to their classrooms… and later for office functions or gatherings that I was attending…

Crystal was telling me she gets lots of compliments when she makes them as well…

the recipe was my Mom’s or maybe even my Grandma’s, I can’t remember… I’m not sure if it is the recipe, or the love that gets baked into them that makes them taste so delicious…

Advent, ashes, garden, Lego, miss Grandpa, remembering

last year, for Advent, Cyndi sent muffin tins filled with 24 treats… this year she sent the items to my office, and my colleagues put them into the tins…

over the 24 days I have received 3 muffin cups full of purple and pink Lego… I made a train-ish thing with the first pieces and kind of added to it when the second batch of pieces arrived, but I hadn’t done anything with the last batch…

train-ish thing I made...

a few days ago I brought all the pieces together and asked Tavin, when he was here, if he’d like to make something… he’s pretty into Lego these days…

final batch of Lego pieces...

final batch of Lego pieces…

I was making dinner while he was working away, and had just sat down when he advised he was done, and brought me his creation so I could check it out and then take a picture to send to Aunty Cyndi…

“here it is Grandma, the little space is for Grandpa’s ashes” he said, “as we haven’t buried them, this could be a spot in the garden to spread some of them”… “we should put some of the others in places Grandpa loved”… have I mentioned he is seven…

Lego house with place for Grandpa's ashes...

on Christmas Eve at their house, he showed me a Lego creation he had produced there and advised that this one also had a place for Grandpa’s ashes…

we both miss Grandpa, a lot…

Jeff made us all breakfast and we continued playing with our toys…

we all came home in time to pop the turkey into the oven, have a snack, and play some more with all the fun things we’d received…

spoke with family and friends on the phone but wasn’t able to wish anyone a Merry Christmas… maybe I will be able to do that next year…

we had lots of fun… after supper we broke the chocolate Christmas tree and ate some of it for dessert after Jeff and I had a lovely hot tub… once the kids left I had a short nap and am enjoying the quiet house…

thinking of all the wonderful times we have celebrated Christmas in this house over the years, and how blessed I am even now…

away from home, change, Christmas Eve, cookies and milk, memories, preparing, stocking, tears

well, here we are, Christmas Eve…

I spent a fair part of the day preparing for tomorrow`s dinner… turnips are in one pot, potatoes in another… stuffing is made – only needed one type this year as Ron won`t be here… homemade cranberry jelly prepared and cooling in the fridge…

now there`s an example of a change… George really only liked Ocean Spray Cranberry Jelly, so I didn`t usually make the homemade version… it came out very well, and I blended it with the purple immersion blender – thinking of my friend Ted, and an experience we had a number of years ago with an immersion blender… ham was cooked and in the fridge, and spinach dip was ready to take…

a friend stopped by just when I was feeling a bit down… she said it will be different but good as well…  I had just been thinking that I hadn`t been away from the house for Christmas eve in over 30 years…

Jeff and the boys came to get me and I almost couldn`t leave, but I put on those darn big girl pants and got into the car along with various bags of goodies and the final gifts… as we drove tears were falling from my eyes, and my dear son-in-law held my hand for a good part of the trip…

as soon as we arrived, the boys insisted that my stocking be added to theirs… they were very excited that I was sleeping over…

stockings were hung by the fire with care...

stockings were hung by the fire with care…

Crystal gave each of the boys a small ornament to hang on the tree… one said Isabella, for George`s mom; one said Ellen, for our dear friend and neighbour; and one for George…

George, added to the tree...

George, added to the tree…

we had appetizers for our dinner, and I talked with Cyndi on the phone…  the boys got into their new Christmas jammies and put out cookies and chocolate milk for Santa…

cookies and chocolate milk for Santa...

cookies and chocolate milk for Santa…

two of the three are in bed, and possibly, asleep…  we`ve been watching Santa`s progress on an app on my phone and he was last seen heading for Newfoundland…

I am thinking of some of my friends, who have recently lost loved ones, and hope that they too are finding some joy amongst the sadness…

there are many presents under the tree… we will see how the morning goes…
