had a lovely day… shortly after I got up the sun rose in the back and I got a few pictures…

sunrise...

it continued to shine all day, which was very nice…

popping up over the houses...

popping up over the houses…

gathered up all the gifts that needed to be wrapped… put some Christmas music on the computer and spent a lovely couple of hours preparing the parcels…

quite a stack of parcels ready for ribbons and bows...

quite a stack of parcels ready for ribbons and bows…

also searched out some fabric and put some under the Norfolk pine in the front window… set out some decorations and made the space feel more cozy…

the kids came by and we went out and picked up the ingredients for our Christmas dinner and a few other items I needed… then we had pizza and all of the Advent chocolates from the reindeer since they’d last been here… I’ve been saving them as I’ve been having a Ferraro Roche every day, lol…

the tree outside looks lovely with the fresh snow and lights shining…

during the day I was playing a Rita McNeil album and thinking that we lost her this year… remembering our visit to her tea house in Big Pond and getting to meet her while we were there… I have enjoyed her music for many years and will continue to remember her through all the music…

thinking about George as well, and how much he would have liked the presents for each of the kids this year… have a few bits to pick up that would have been his prep, but will now become mine…

traditions continue, but in a slightly new way…

woke up with a bad headache… my arm was very sore, as were my feet and back…

went out for a hot tub, wearing my water shoes and that worked very well, particularly as it was snowing like crazy and my slippers would have filled up with snow… wore a toque and a baseball hat to keep warm and not have snow in my eyes…

then went back into the house and slept for another few hours… still had the headache, but it had eased somewhat…

basically have done nothing all day, and my head is finally feeling better… feet are okay and my arm has improved as well…

going back to bed and looking forward to a good day tomorrow…

as I went upstairs just before dark the moon was gazing down at me so I went and got the camera and tripod and took a few pictures…

Crystal picked me up from work tonight and took me home with her…

once we got there we had a lovely dinner of tortellini with mushrooms and shrimp and Alfredo sauce… very nice, although just a bit spicy for my taste, lol…

while our musician was getting ready, I helped with homework and watched video games…

then we were off… dropped the musician at school and ran over to Starbuck’s to get some coffee and hot chocolate… another lovely treat because I never even think of getting something from there… I particularly like their white hot chocolate… it has lots of whipping cream in it…

found a great parking spot and joined a large gym full of family and friends to see and hear the concert… bands from grade 7, 8, and 9 played with a few songs from a choir and a final piece from the grade 9 jazz band… the first song that the grade 8s (our boy) played was spectacular and the final piece by the jazz band was very nice as well…

for whatever reason, this year the band members were not on risers or a stage and so the only picture of our guy was a tiny bit of hair sticking up from the crowd of young people… the director told us that the 85 member grade 9 band practices in three separate groups and they had only played together as a whole band since yesterday… quite a feat…

back to their house where I was turned over to another driver for the ride home…

our musician...

our musician…

before we left I got a couple of great shots of the musician, who was happy to comply…

on the ride home I was reflecting on all the band concerts that George and I attended over the years while the girls were in school…

I was very pleased that Jeff brought me home, because once here, he shovelled out the sidewalk at the street where the plows had piled up big chunks of snow…

now it is all clear, and I am heading to bed… been a busy day…

had a conversation with someone about how they needed to clean up all their paperwork in the event that something should happen to them… currently they are sorting through boxes of a parent’s documents…

got me thinking about my folder in the filing cabinet which is titled “when mom dies“… sounds a bit maudlin, but when I was searching through many filing cabinet drawers for all of the information that I needed when George died, it made me realize that the more I got organized for the girls, the easier it would be on them…

in that folder are things like my birth certificate, marriage certificate, a few pictures from when I was younger, copy of my will, power of attorney, health directive, with some information about George as well…

they know who my financial advisor is, and my accountant, and between those two they will be able to sort out all the money stuff…

but it was those other bits and pieces that were difficult to find and gather into one place…

George and I hand wrote our wills when the girls were very small and we were heading off together on a plane trip and wanted to have something written down in case we didn’t get home safely…

after that we didn’t think about the wills again… when he died I knew exactly where the will should be, but couldn’t find it for weeks… not a huge problem, as everything was coming to me as his spouse, but at one point the credit union was insistent on having a copy of the will to set up an estate account…

I had searched the house over trying to find that darn will and eventually I discovered it at the back of the drawer where I knew it should have been…

then there was the (sort of) funny part where the young person at the credit union wasn’t sure they could accept a hand-written will as she had never seen one… I knew it was legal from my time working in a law office, but it was very stressful for the three or four days it took the credit union to accept it… the reason we needed an Estate account was that the cheques that were arriving were all made out to the Estate of and couldn’t be cashed if they weren’t in an Estate account… red tape can make a person see red sometimes, lol…

both George and I thought all our stuff was organized and clear but I discovered that wasn’t really the case… since then I have recommended to all my friends that they have the hard conversations with their husbands and families and make sure that everything is accessible and all decisions have been discussed by families…

must go and check out that folder and see if there is anything else that needs to get popped into it…

and do some more shredding so that the kids don’t have an enormous task ahead of them at a time when they will already be under tremendous stress…

preparing isn’t just an Advent thing, lol..

last night when the first of my group arrived, she advised that the huge bag of gifts she had wasn’t for me…

as it happens, I like presents, and all my friends know this…

when we were gathered… one by Skype and three of us here (one was at the theatre so wasn’t with us)… she advised that she had filled shoe boxes on our behalf for women in local shelters… she had picked out hats or gloves, and scarves, socks, toothbrushes, deodorant, gift cards for Shoppers Drug Mart, lotion, bubble bath, a dragonfly ornament and chocolate for each person… she had wrapped up a box for each one and brought tissue and cards with her…

we got to go through our box, making sure there were no price tags left on any items and put the tissue in,  and then write a card for the woman who will receive the box…

it was a wonderful gift – for us – and for the women who will receive it… we spent a wonderful hour discovering the different items in each of our boxes and exclaiming over items in the other boxes… writing the cards and trying to find just the right sentiment…

a perfect gift for us, as none of us really needs anything… over the years we have donated animals to people in Africa, purchased items for 1Hope, sent cheques off to various organizations in honour of our group…

it really is better to give than to receive…

since December first I have been opening an Advent gift each day from my daughter in Ottawa… besides a chocolate every day – Ferraro Roche – I have received beautiful circle magnets with pictures she has taken on them… each one has been of our trip to Alaska, visit to Seattle and Victoria… they have brought back some wonderful memories of our time together this spring…

I can hardly wait to open one each morning as I wonder what picture will be there…

giving can bring such joy to the receiver, as well as the giver…

disasters…

yesterday my daughter was having some serious plumbing problems… of course, her husband wasn’t home and she had to source solutions on her own…

reminded me of the many years we would have Christmas Eve disasters… one year the water was shut off on the street and we went for 24 hours without water… another year the water tank stopped working and we had to get someone in to replace it on Christmas Eve… another time the furnace broke down and it was in the -30s and the kids were quite small… then there was the sewer back-up…

it got so that we were prepared for whatever the Christmas Eve disaster was going to be…

it sure wasn’t funny at the time but eventually we were able to laugh about them…

did make me think I should have Roto-Rooter in to clean out the sewer lines as they haven’t been done for a few years and the roots from the neighbourhood trees are probably happily filling up the lines…

reminded me of the flood in the basement which happened just before I left for the cruise… and what good timing it was…

water still running to the drain...

hot water tank that burst…

tonight, after work I was able to open the frozen-shut hot tub cover and put in the needed chemicals… it had been frozen on Saturday when I went to do the weekly maintenance and on Sunday I didn’t even bother to try to open it… now the chemicals have been distributed and maybe tomorrow night I will head out there for a lovely tub… not tonight… heading to bed…

didn’t leave the house today…

spent a lot of time watching Gordon Ramsey cook Christmas dinners… yum… couldn’t drag myself away, lol…

bubbles in the window...

also put up some decorations… I’d seen something on Pinterest and had wanted to try it and had fun hanging up some glass ornaments using the idea…

broke one in the process, but was very happy with the outcome… it also reminded me of the special time we had at the Champagne Bubble Party this summer because I was using the clear glass ornaments that we hung all over the garden to represent bubbles…

moved the Norfolk pine into the window but not sure if I will leave it there…

never did get out to try and open the lid of the hot tub… maybe after work tomorrow…

been thinking of the importance of family and how blessed I am with the wonderful family that I have… George would be so proud of all the kids…

today the sun came out and shone for the entire day… it was glorious… haven’t had much sun in the last few weeks…

beautiful shadow effect on the trellis by the garage.. also shows how much snow has fallen…

it was also brutally cold.. on my way out I took a few minutes to shovel off the two lower decks so that I could have a hot tub later… by the time I got into the car my fingers were numb, felt like I didn’t even have any gloves on…

after I got home I went out to put chemicals into the hot tub and couldn’t open it… the cover is frozen closed… hope to try again tomorrow with warmer clothes on…

drift across the garden..

drift across the garden..

there is a lot of snow in the backyard… and there is a very interesting drift across the yard… it’s a new one, must have something to do with the pond reconstruction…

if you look close you can see where the rabbit hopped onto the deck…

bunny prints on the deck..

made me think of how George always took care of me.. making sure that the decks were cleared and the lid was open when I headed out for a hot tub…

this is what I saw when I went to step out the door this morning…

this little tree is lit in the evening and looks very nice…

I had to hook it to the rail because it kept falling over, lol…

there is a lot of snow out there… when I took the garbage and recycling out this morning there were big drifts that I could hardly get through but I had to get them out as last week there was no way I could get though the snow…

been a really long week and I am hoping to rest and recuperate over the weekend…
