Assiniboine Park, big girl pants, friend, rules, terminology, Ultimate, walk

don’t think I’d heard of Ultimate until a few years ago when a colleague mentioned it…

since then I’ve seen people playing it in the Park by the Lyric, but I’ve never actually watched…

today I was at my first game… my friend let me know she and her daughter were at Assiniboine Park for a tournament…

usually on Saturday I spend the day vegging out and watching tv…

great way to get me up and moving, lol… I got ready and walked over to the Park… had a visit with my friend and learned some of the finer points of the sport while we watched her daughter play…

there aren’t any referees and lots of support from the sidelines… the rule book is very long so having individuals like my friend, who has played for twenty years, around who know the rules is a great benefit… had to giggle as one of the coaches went to the rules online from their phone for a bit of clarity…

this is a mixed league and being a good sport is very important… and there is no body contact…

always so happy to see that the kids treat one another well… the handshake at the end of the game is just the same as my boys have with their soccer and volleyball games…

teams for this tournament played with four males and three females on the field…

there was a great deal of terminology to learn… not sure that I got it all, lol…

excellent way to spend a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon… don’t think this will be the last time I watch Ultimate…

Assiniboine Park, big girl pants, datura, garden, greenhouses, leaves, thankful, voted

spent a fair bit of time outdoors today…

had some folks over to pick up an old treadmill from the basement, and mow and whippersnip the grass… they did a great job…

when they were done, I walked over to the community club and voted before taking a walk to, and around, the Gardens at the Park…

leaves were everywhere as I walked and the paths in the Park were covered as well…

the gardeners have been busy in both the Gardens… they were moving some of the large daturas to the greenhouses…

most of the beds have been emptied and tidied up for the winter…

spent time sitting and admiring some of the colourful leaves…

this one landed right on my leg…

made me face the fact that I need to spend some time tidying up in my garden, lol…

been thinking a lot about all the things that I am thankful for and certainly one of them is this beautiful park…

Assiniboine Park, big girl pants, garden, mosquitoes, relaxing

had a quiet relaxing morning as I didn’t start work until eleven… lovely to be able to putter around the house…

began to unwind on the drive home as we took the scenic route along Wellington Crescent… such a pretty drive, even went through the Park…

arrived home to find my friends in the garden with the cushions already on the chairs…

had a great couple of hours enjoying our time together as the sun set… lots of laughs and interesting conversation in a beautiful setting… although we might have spotted a couple of mosquitoes…

the newly potted plants look great…

I love this weather and the time I get to spend outside…

Assiniboine Park, big girl pants, greenhouse, hot tub

wonderful day… early morning hot tub and a walk to the Park where I wandered around the English and Leo Mol gardens…

got some pictures of the undone gardens and am looking forward to taking pictures from the same spots as the summer progresses… was thinking about how cool it would be to see inside the Park’s greenhouses…

checked out the Duck Pond and spotted a few ducks and geese, but not many yet…

on my walk over I spotted four mallards in our creek… didn’t see the wood ducks though…

kids picked me up and we went to a number of stores and greenhouses… got some baskets of flowers and a great collection of pond plants… made me very happy because if you don’t pick them up early you might not find any… too cold for them to go out yet, but the counter in the dining room has become a lovely little greenhouse…

had a teenburger for lunch and picked up the fixings for steak and shrimp for our dinner…

Jeff and the boys caught the fish in the tank…

and then moved them into the pond, carrying on grandpa’s tradition… he always loved taking them outside after the long winter in their condo…

had a number of conversations with my Ottawa kids and spent the entire day with my kids here…

the boys cleaned up after dinner and I am now prone on the bed watching tv…

worn out, lol…

Angel's Trumpet, Assiniboine Park, datura, delphiniums, English Garden, evening, Leo Mol, nature, orange sky, water lilies

rushed home to meet young friends who were wanting to borrow a prop for a birthday party…

they left and my friend arrived to pick me up to go for a walk at the Park… as we left home it had just stopped spitting… we had a lovely walk through the English Garden and around the Duck Pond…

the delphiniums were stunning in purple and blue,

delphiniums in main garden...

lovely water lilies in the Leo Mol garden although all the ponds were filled with algae… not so pretty for us but likely make the ducks and geese happy…

water lilies in Leo Mol garden...

and a wonderful rose in the main garden… think this was my best shot…

the datura were also quite amazing… in our zone, these are annuals… the gardeners lift them up in the fall, overwinter them in the greenhouses, and then put them out again the next year…

we arrived back at the car just as the rain began…

then we went to my friend’s place for a lovely tenderloin dinner with rice, Asian vegetables, tomato and cucumber salad with peach pie and shortbread cookies for dessert… what a lovely treat…

home to watch a few shows and then as I was heading to the computer to write my blog post I looked out at the sky, found my camera and went to the front door…

the sky was orange… the colour in this picture is the exact shade…

Assiniboine Park, breakfast out, Bruce Park, ducks in a row, George, Memory Stone, peace and serenity, the "A", the Park, time together, waiting for Canada Day celebrations

this morning I got up and headed over to the Park to see if I could find the Memory Stone that I had commissioned at Christmas time…

it was a beautiful day and I enjoyed the walk over… there weren’t many people about and it was easy to soak up the peace and serenity…

waiting for Canada Day crowds...

waiting for tomorrow’s Canada Day crowds…

found the stone without too much trouble… happy they had done a good job… it did make me laugh a little though, because obviously a duck or goose had left a little memento, right on my stone, so I had to clean it off with my shoe before taking any pictures…

while I was there I got a few cute shots of some ducks sitting all in a row…

ducks lined up all in a row...

ducks lined up all in a row…

there was a group of men on the other side of the pond with their motorized boats and I took a few pictures of them…

the Park was clearly waiting for Canada Day… tents were all over the big field and there were rows on rows of port-a-potties just waiting for the crowds…

port-a-potties waiting...

port-a-potties waiting…

I walked through Bruce Park on my way home and encountered woodpeckers, squirrels and bunnies…

to top things off I stopped at the “A” for breakfast on my own… it was very difficult and I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I sat down, ordered, and ate my breakfast… this was one of the spots that George and I would have breakfast on a Sunday morning and I have only been there once since he died…

on the walk home I held back tears and worked at remembering the fun we had when we went for breakfast there… he would usually drive and I would walk and he would already have the tea ordered by the time I got there… he wasn’t supposed to eat bacon, but that would be the one day that he would get to and we always teased one another about it…

today as I sat listening to couples talking, I hoped they knew how lucky they were to have time together..

Assiniboine Park, Canada Goose, discomfort, not spring yet, peaceful hot tub, up early

still feeling some discomfort in my side/back which seems to get worse overnight… apparently sleeping is not really that good for me, lol…

this morning I got up at 5 and had a peace-filled hot tub which did help a bit…

heading off for breakfast with some great women with hopes that the walk there  would help with whatever it is that I have done to the silly thing…

along the way I came across a very sad Canada Goose that was hollering – because there was very little water, as the Assiniboine is still 95% frozen…

very little open water on the Assiniboine...

very little open water on the Assiniboine…

he yelled for the longest time while I was taking his picture as he wandered along the edge of the open water while his mate quietly stood waiting…

hollering goose, maybe the water was toooooooo cold...

hollering goose, maybe the water was toooooooo cold…

further down the river I could see more of them… they must be wondering whether they took a wrong turn on their way north because it doesn’t seem very spring-like around here…

the Duck Pond is closed to skating but there are no ducks on/in it yet, lol…

thin ice, although there is still plenty of snow...

thin ice, although there is still plenty of snow…

after a lovely time with my friends, I was picked up and ran a few errands with my daughter… then it was home for a steak and lobster dinner to celebrate my upcoming birthday…

my back is still grumpy, much like the goose but feeling slightly better as the day progresses… hope it smartens up soon…
