just yesterday a colleague and I were discussing how best to look after orchids…

I was sharing the story of my IKEA orchid which I purchased in October… it bloomed until about a month ago and now a new stem is blooming…


I treat orchids like cut flowers… well, basically that’s how I deal with all plants…

I water them sparingly on Saturday… some people use an ice cube weekly to be sure they don’t overwater… my orchids have all liked being in the sun for a good portion of the day…

if they last longer than a bouquet that’s great, if not they get tossed…

way less stress and I am often pleasantly surprised when they last a long time… 

I have a bamboo which one of my daughter’s friends brought me when I had surgery in 2010… still going strong…

tonight I was sitting outside while the pond was filling and admiring the daisy explosion in the garden…


they are everywhere…

flowers inside and out… what a treat…

Atlanta Day 2…

this morning I stood at the window looking out over the city of Atlanta taking pills and chugging them back with a bottle of water…


for many years getting pills down was very difficult and I always had to have juice or tea because I didn’t drink water… 

now, they slide down easily and water is something I drink all the time…

and I have travelled a whole lot more…

I’ve come a long way baby;-)…

here are just a few shots of things that made me happy throughout the day…

a cacao tree… later in the day we stopped and had some excellent chocolate…

a huge purple orchid…

a stunning blue and purple installation which we nearly missed…

a lotus blooming…

dusting of one of the glass pieces…

a ginormous bumblebee…

fun at the Midtown sign which we just discovered this morning…

being quite naughty and disobeying a few rules…

it has been raining since around four this afternoon so I decided to write about a more positive view of water for me, lol…

I love water… rain, not so much… don’t like to get my face wet…

early yesterday I spent a few minutes in the garden…

enjoyed the reflection of the solar lights in the pond…


the waterfall looks so lovely and watching and listening to it makes me happy…


last evening I went to aquasize with my friend… 

at one point water splashed up onto my face and into my ear… yuck… 

I have come a long way because at one time I would have got out of the pool, dried my face, and not gone back in… 

with those darn big girl pants, I just wiped my face with my hands and carried on… although I did complain about it;-)…

woke up to the gentle sound of rain on the window… we’ve really needed it…


could almost see the grass getting greener, lol…

was a bit worried because I am still getting water in the basement if it rains a lot… happily, when I got home and checked, it was dry… even though it rained on and off all day…

finally wore my new Patagonia rain jacket when I headed out for my lunch date… bought it for New York, but the weather was great so I never used it…

met a friend at deer + almond… my first time there and it was excellent… food was tasty and the service was impeccable…


I had an open faced seared tuna sandwich with a goat cheese salad… yum…

spent time in the water after work as my swimming pal and I went for an aquasize class…

lots of water today, lol…

what a wonderful day…

met up with my son-in-law and we went in search of rocks for the pond…

we found some river stone for the bottom of the pond and eventually some nice sized fieldstone for around the perimeter as I haven’t felt the flat slate edge worked well…  
 

we also picked up a power washer…

   

came home and someone played with it for quite a while…

 

had lunch on the deck, put together the hammock, enjoyed looking at my new hibiscus, and headed out for more fun…
  

found a rain barrel on sale, some dahlias and three air plants…

  

very happy with the barrel as the garbage can I’d been using sprang a leak at the end of last year… this one is very fancy and can hold plants in the top…

picked up the boys from school and on our way back here, stopped for soft ice cream and found purple gazing balls – 3 different sizes which I think will float in the pond… and the kids bought them for me for Mother’s Day;-)… 

  

this was my first ice cream of the year… woo hoo… ordered Chinese food and while we were waiting for it to arrive, work began on cleaning and re-rocking the pond… 

  
finished filling the pond after they left and got the waterfall going… it sounds wonderful…

great to spend time in the garden… even got to sit out in the chairs for a bit…

enjoyed a lovely walk in two parks this afternoon…

haven’t walked through Truro Park for ages…

this is the spot where we scattered George’s ashes… 

  

spent some time taking pictures of the water along my walk… this was my favourite… took it in Bruce Park… 

just love the sound of running water… makes me happy…

haven’t been this way in a while… last time I walked here regularly was when I was recovering from my surgery and talking daily short walks…

the final treat was spotting these two ducks on my way back…

  

a gorgeous wood duck and his partner…

will have to walk through that area on a regular basis so I might get to see some babies…

looking forward to getting the pond working soon so that I can hear the running water right here…

started the day with a carousel ride in some cool fish at Seaglass… followed by a cruise on one of the rivers, a view of the Statue of Liberty, a visit with Monet’s water lilies, a wander through St. John the Divine, and an evening ride on the water…

quite a day…

had to top up the water in the pond, so I spent a few minutes enjoying the fish… always makes me feel calm and relaxed…  

  

overcast when we headed to work… but still nice…

around two our fire alarm went off…

  
out we went, and across the street to the approved gathering spot… started to spit while we were out there… 

three fire trucks and two other fire vehicles arrived to check things out… work in the basement may have caused the alarm, so we were back inside within half an hour, once they were able to find the alarm panel and turn it off… that bell is very loud…

within five minutes of our return to the office the sky went black and the heavens opened…

  

picked up by my daughter and grandson and we went to The Burger Place for supper as the concert they were going to was cancelled due to the storm…

  
it was still raining and the puddles were amazing…

  
my daughter took this great shot of the corner where we were having our supper… one of George’s favourite places…

got home and was happy to discover that, although water had come into the basement, it had mainly been soaked up by the towels that I leave on the floor…

  
a bit had run across the floor to the drain, but nothing had gone as far as the carpet…

  

probably didn’t need to top up the pond, lol…

yikes…

the pond wasn’t running when I got up this morning… not good… the water had gone down so low that the float stopped the pump…

took more than twenty minutes to get it to the level that it started to flow again… and I didn’t have any more time to finish filling it…

meanwhile I was running around the house searching for my medical card… which I didn’t find… still have quite a few items to put away as I pulled them out looking for the darn thing… when I went to Ottawa I only took things I felt I would need and left the rest in two places… thought I took it, but it is nowhere to be found…

I needed it because I had a meet and greet appointment with a new general practitioner… 

to top off the trio of issues, the printer wouldn’t spit out an outline of some of my medical history which I wanted to take with me… yikes… emailed it to the office and did it there…

thankfully was able to go and pick up a new card while I was downtown…

took this picture of a spot I used to walk to every day after work to meet my friend and driving buddy…

  
I do like water, lol so it was lovely to see it… felt like 30°C out there…

met the doctor and he was prepared to accept me as a patient, which was great news… he is a recent grad and very personable… and is part of a good-sized clinic much closer to home…

looking forward to getting to know him better…

woke up to this view out the window first thing…

  
bit rainy and damp…

we had breakfast, visited, and made plans for the day and week…

got a few pictures of our pretty toes while waiting for the bus… people around us must have thought we were crazy…

  
off to the mall to see Cinderella… excellent movie… “have courage and be kind”…

falafel in the food court with a bottle of water and then downtown for a boat cruise on the river… wonderful falls which I haven’t seen before as well as lots of other facts and tidbits from the tour guide…

  
this shot looks toward Gatineau Park where we went hot air ballooning last year when I was here…

  
the light was much better when we got off the boat so we retook all the pictures we had done on our way down beside the locks…

  

then a walk through Byward Market and dinner at Luxe… delicious… had bone marrow for the first time and it was very nice… followed up with ricotta gnocchi on asparagus, porcini mushrooms, edamame, and tomato, with parmesan snow… oh my… if you get a chance you should eat there…

  
finally finished off dinner with a beavertail…  a bit of indulgence… only ate a little more than half…

  
lots of water in my day, lol…
