took this photo of a dahlia in the garden getting ready to bloom…

although I just bought these this spring it made me think about the ones we bought in 2011 in Courtenay…

we went to visit the Dahlia man… he was very old and lived on a property at the edge of Courtney/Comox… I can’t remember the man’s name, but George would have… he remembered all that type of stuff…

we must have spent two hours with him… looking at all the dahlias which were blooming and then going through his boxes and ziplock bags filled with tubers… he and my beloved talked and talked, lol…

we brought home some of the tubers and he sent more later…

they bloomed beautifully and at the end of the season we lifted them and packed them up for the next year… sadly they were put in ziplock bags and in the spring were all mushy… we hadn’t let them dry sufficiently before bagging them…

both of my girls have developed the same ability to talk to anyone anywhere and know all about them by the end of the conversation… makes me giggle… so not me…

as we drove out to Rabbit Lake for the Regatta we stopped so I could get a shot of the runway, lol…

reminded me of driving along Ness by the airport…

it was a lovely sunny day, until it wasn’t… all of a sudden these huge dark clouds appeared and the thunder started rolling…

our guy was at the start line for his first race ever when they announced that everyone had to come off the water…

then we waited to see if the downpour was going to stop… in the club, along with all the boats they had sandwiches, fruit, treats and souvenirs, which we might never have seen without the rain, lol…

all the grandparents stood around under the awning with the mother and son and had a snack…

there was one lighting strike right across the lake which had everyone jump about a foot off the ground… we could smell the ozone… after about 45 minutes the rain stopped and clouds broke up…

the sky cleared and the races were back on… our boy did very well… he finished his singles… it was a long way…

then he had to come back to the dock and jump into the boat with his doubles partner and off they went… they got a third place in that race… all in all it was an excellent start to his rowing career…

lots of fun to watch but we did learn that we are going to need binoculars for this sport, lol…

yesterday, started our morning at the campsite… quick breakfast and my daughter, oldest grandson and I headed to Rabbit Lake, on the outskirts of Kenora…

it is a lovely little lake that is going to be the site for rowing at the Canada Games over the next few weeks…

we spent a good portion of our day here… waiting for the boats to arrive, watching the kids get them offloaded, and then various practices as they prepared for today’s Tops and Bottoms Regatta…

we headed into town for a bit of the time where we had lunch at the Boathouse, which seemed fitting, lol… while we were there it started to pour… there was thunder, and lightning was flashing… we had to go back and get our boy, but did stop for some chips from the Ye Old Chip truck… I mean, we were in Kenora, lol…

picked up our boy, came back into town and checked into the hotel… our room had a great view of the harbour…

back at Rabbit Lake the sun came out and we actually got to see some rowing… very proud of my grandson as he prepares for his first races…

after practice it was back to town for supper and an early evening…

he went out with his teammates and we had dinner in the Waterside Restaurant which is high above the water and offered stunning views… the food was very tasty…

not sure how many pictures I took, lol…

yesterday my grandson picked me up at work and we drove to the lake to meet up with the rest of the kids…

a lovely drive and time to catch up with the oldest…

when we arrived at the campsite folks were starting to prepare dinner… perogies, garlic sausage, onions, mushrooms, corn on the cob, French beans and yellow wax beans…

and, as they nearly always do, cooked over the fire… takes a while, but was delicious…

not sure if the slightly murky looking skies are due to the wildfires in BC… have noticed that the sun is often behind a haze…

it was entertaining to watch the two men in the group as they had fun chopping wood for the fire…

they are brothers and worked so well together to get the job done, but were clearly enjoying every minute…

here fishy, fishy, fishy…

that was how we started our early morning fishing expedition yesterday once we were on the water, lol…

within about two minutes of the lures being dropped over the side of the boat, as we were trolling, the first Jack fish was caught…

and they kept coming… the younger boys caught the first four and then we adults caught some as well… I was pretty excited when I caught one… totalled 11ish… some discussion as to whether they counted if they jumped off as we were bringing them into the boat, lol…

the last person to catch one was my son-in-law… he was using his fancy catfish rod that we picked up last week for his birthday… he was also the one driving the boat and bringing in the fish when they came up to the side…

between he and my daughter they were able to get the lures out of the mouths of the fish, who were really trying to swallow them whole… some of that process was a little gross…

July is not a time to eat Jack so we never did get to have fish for breakfast…

this was my early morning snack…

pretty fine place for a jar of chia pudding…

last night, after our supper, cooked on the fire, we had s’mores… we used chocolate covered cookies and smooshed the marshmallow between two of them… yummy… couldn’t get a photo because it was dark…

today the sky was very interesting… this is the view I had when I woke up…

the dog and I took a short walk and got this picture…

up early again, but everyone else got up too, and we went fishing…

the sky was foggy or misty or smoky, we couldn’t decide which…

got a fun shot of some of the boats in the marina…

later in the day finally got a nice picture of one of the many loons we saw throughout our time in the boat…

there was lots of tubing fun..

last night right after work my daughter and I headed out to meet up with the family at Falcon Lake… we picked up a few groceries and were on the road by 6:15…

traffic wasn’t too bad and we arrived to find the pop-up camper ready and the three guys around the fire… for supper we had burgers on ciabatta buns and veggies…

delicious… they went for a short walk as I was finishing my blog post…

lovely fire… very relaxing…

a good night’s sleep and I was up and out early… this is the difference between six am…

and ten am, lol…

bunch of sleepy heads…

this is the first trip with the tent trailer and we are having fun figuring out where to put things and how other things work… my beloved would have enjoyed it… we talked about him this morning as the Coleman propane stove they have is the one we used for camping trips… it is older than my daughter;-)…

I am forever amazed at how these kids can cook just about anything over the campfire, which is always delicious, but sometimes a bit slow…

big girl pants, feet, garden, memories, obsessed, pictures, pond, runners, shoes, waiting, widow

a few weeks ago I was stopped at a light on my way to work and someone crossed in front of me with the most amazing green runners… it was too late to get out my phone to take a picture… a few days later I was waiting by Polo Park and a ton of people were rushing to make the light and many of them had cool shoes… again, no time to take any photos…

since then I’ve been obsessed with shoes…

wherever I’ve been walking, if I see some interesting shoes l stop and take a picture, after asking if it is okay…

people seem to feel special and always say yes…

here’s what I’ve come up with so far…

when my oldest was a pre-teen, she went through a stage where she always wore two different coloured runners… lasted for a few years and still now, if I spot someone with two different shoes on it reminds me of those days…

on my Facebook page I often put up pictures of my feet as I am relaxing by the pond… it has become a bit of a ritual to do foot pictures in various places now… getting pedicures, waiting for appointments, on vacation…

this one from March is of my son-in-law and I in Mazatlan as we were waiting for a strike on the fishing lines, which never did happen…

took this one yesterday as I was drinking tea and waiting for my hair to dry…

beloved, big girl pants, camping, clematis, family, flowers, George, grandsons, memories, moments, Palomino, pop-up, purple, trailer, widow

we’ve been searching for a trailer for camping for the last while… looked at a few options but they weren’t just what we were wanting…

on Friday I went with my son-in-law and the younger grandsons to look at a pop-up trailer just outside the city…

we found the place rather easily, lol…

there was the most beautiful clematis in the driveway, and I had to take some pictures…

we had a look at the trailer which was set up in the garage…

although it is bigger, it reminded me of the trailer that we had for many years and the great camping trips we enjoyed with it…

we decided to buy it… it was a bit of a process, but between my credit union and the one in the town, we managed to get the funds so we wouldn’t have to make another trip to pick up the trailer…

when we got back to the house where it was, I was chatting with the woman who was selling it, as her dad and my son-in-law were taking it down…

she was talking about how her dad was such a support for her and I said something about my husband being the same for my daughters… then I mentioned he had died five years ago… she looked at me oddly and said George… at which point we realized that she had worked with my beloved… she had thought I looked familiar but was confused when my son-in-law had the same name, lol…

makes the trailer even more special…

the final giggle for me was the brand name on it… anyone who knows my son-in-law will see the connection…

he worked at the Palomino Club for years… we didn’t even notice this until we got it home…

looking forward to family fun and memories with this new addition….

clearly this was meant to be… serendipity…
