yesterday I travelled from Winnipeg to Ottawa to spend Christmas with my daughter, son-in-law and his mother… the flight was jam packed and I had the sweetest little person sitting beside me… if she asked why once, she asked a hundred times, lol…

when I arrived, we had a lovely dinner of appetizers… there were fancy cheeses, chocolate salami, coconut shrimp, chicken wings, many types of fancy crackers, fruit, veggies and hummus as well as a variety of home-baked cookies…

we had bubbly to celebrate my retirement…

stockings were hung on the mantle and the tree looked ever so festive with lots of gifts under it…

a wonderful start to my visit;-)…

for the first time ever, I was alone on Christmas morning…

it was odd and I spent some time thinking back to so many Christmas morning celebrations over the years…

there were no stockings to open as the kids had come over on Sunday and had fun opening them then…

part way through the morning, as I was watching a Christmas movie, I heard an engine running so came downstairs to see what was going on…

it was a fire truck and ambulance parked across the street in front of a neighbour’s house… took a while to figure out which house they were at, and the good news is they took someone out who was using oxygen… they didn’t rush off, so that was also good news… I don’t know this particular neighbour and hope they are going to be okay…

did bring back some memories… some of losing my beloved, but others of some of the crazy things that have happened to us over Christmas Eves in the past, lol… from water heaters needing to be replaced, furnaces not producing heat, to sewers backing up… we went through a number of special times, lol…

but, issues would always be resolved by Christmas morning…

as I was looking back through my posts I came across this one that was also titled engine, lol… seemed to fit with the theme…

later today I am heading to Ottawa to spend time with my kids there and meet my son-in-law’s mom for the first time…

my grandson will be house sitting while I am gone;-)…

how blessed I have been and continue to be…

up way too early to get ready for my BS buddies who were coming over for brunch and sharing of Christmas gifts…

everyone brought something for the meal… there were avocados, breads, cheeses, jam and eggs… delicious…

lots of great conversation and some wonderful gifts were shared…

home baking, jam, eco wrap, chocolate, handmade aprons and donations… love throughout…

these women have been an integral part of my life for over 30 years… through all the good and bad times…

what a wonderful time we have together;-)…

had Christmas dinner with the kids tonight… we’d decided to have a non-traditional meal, except there would be stuffing, lol…

we had presents, decorated gingerbread house pieces, opened Christmas crackers, enjoyed a delicious steak and lobster dinner with stuffing muffins, twice-stuffed potatoes, mushrooms, and salad… finished up with gingerbread pieces that had a lot of icing and candies on them, lol…

on Christmas Day I will fly to Ottawa to spend time with my daughter, son-in-law and his mom… looking forward to meeting her for the first time;-)…

as I remember many wonderful Christmas traditions, from the years while my beloved was with us to the years since he’s been gone, I look forward to new traditions we may start this year…

for Advent my daughter sent me a collection of watercolour cards with quotations on the back… she painted each one and hand printed the sayings… I haven’t heard yet where she found them…

I had decided that this year I would spend time each morning being grateful for a particular thing, but didn’t have a list… that was as far as I’d got, lol…

I’ve found that the quotes on the cards have prompted me just enough to choose a topic…

it has been very cathartic…

went to the Outlet Mall with my grandson… had savoury crepes for lunch… very tasty, but a little messy to eat, lol…

from there we visited quite a few shoe stores before he found just the right pair…

then we spent some time in the Calvin Klein store… the shopping didn’t take long, prices were great, but the line-up to pay was rather tedious…

there were lots of beautiful decorations wherever we walked…

always great to spend time with this kind young man…

had a delightful afternoon with a dear friend…

she makes decorating for the season so much fun… both of us are team players and we work well together…

we did some of the usual set-ups and then tried something new… we hung a collection of wreaths together on the wall… looks good…

I can’t even say how many collections I have… more and more I am bringing out less and less… I think that January and February might be a good time to go through the boxes and pass many items along to others…

the living room looks lovely and spending time together brought out my holiday spirit;-)…

today the chimney came down…

just before Christmas I had planned to get a chimney sweep out to make sure it was safe to use the fireplace as I hadn’t used it since my beloved died… decided to wait until the weather was more conducive to someone climbing up onto the roof…

I finally made an appointment a few weeks ago for someone to come out to inspect and clean it… they looked at the fireplace and said we needed to go outside so I could see why they weren’t going to clean it…

they explained that the chimney had rusted out and would either need to be replaced or removed…

in the end I chose removal as the cost of a new chimney was prohibitive for the amount the fireplace is used…

this morning they came and took it down…

apparently the chimneys of this era rusted from the inside and out… my beloved would have realized that the rust on the outside of the chimney was a sign that it needed to be checked… I was just lucky that I didn’t start a fire…

now that it is capped there won’t be any drafts, lol…

maybe in the Fall I will have Ye Olde Soot Sweepers out to show me options for changing it to gas… will have to see…

yesterday, mid morning, all of sudden the display on my Charge 3 stopped working… my battery was fully charged and it continued to record and buzzed at appropriate times… just couldn’t see anything… Fitbit foibles…

so I called the Fitbit support line and they told me to hook up to the charger and push the button for 8 seconds… sadly I didn’t have the charger at the office, but connected it when I got home… that didn’t fix it…

it was late when I emailed the person who had sent me the directions, but I got an email back this morning… another set of directions… this time held the button for 15 seconds…

it worked… hurray… don’t realize how much you depend on it until it isn’t working…

hope this isn’t a sign that it is going to have problems… the kids gave it to me for Christmas and I love it;-)…
