out and about in the sunshine for a good portion of the day yesterday…

ran a few errands, grocery shopped, got the lawn mowed… and had a wonderful steak dinner…

trying a different method of running the water in the pond… currently I need to top it up every few days so I’ve only been turning it on when I am home and in the garden… hoping that this new system will show us if the water is evaporating or leaking through the hose…

yesterday my son-in-law and youngest grandson came over…

we ran out and got a few errands done and then made a late lunch…

my son-in-law barbecued steaks and my grandson sliced mushrooms and chopped lettuce for our salad…

first barbecue of the year and it was delicious…

while the steaks were cooking my son-in-law cleaned up a bit of the yard and the pond… and he found three clumps of frog spawn…

been listening to frogs croaking since I’ve been home, so very excited and hopeful that we will have lots of tadpoles and frogs…

then we walked over to Sargent Sundae for ice cream, although it was a bit chilly, lol…

well, what a busy and fun day with my boys…

they came over after an early soccer game and we met for breakfast at the “A“… first time I’ve walked over there in ages…

from there we went shopping and then to the movies… saw Fantastic Beasts, which was great… then back to the mall…

on our way home we stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few final ingredients for our supper…

the oldest grandson arrived just before our meal…

great dinner, the boys tidied up and everyone spent some time on their devices before they headed home…

spent the day doing things around the house…

longest job involved the hot tub... ran some chemicals through, and then had to wait for an hour and run the pump again…

eventually was able to drain it…

remembered to take a picture as it began draining… takes a couple of hours to empty completely…

then I had to find the shop vac, which I have never used, and vacuum out all the last bits of crud and water from the bottom… that was a process… you’d think it would dump out water in a simple manner, like maybe push a reverse button, but no, you have to take off the top and then dump it… got a wet sandal in the process… didn’t take any pictures…

now to the filling portion… remembered the pic again, lol…

takes over an hour to fill and while I was doing that I got out Barbie and cooked a steak and some zuchinni…

this little guy was having a snack at the same time…

new to the neighbourhood, we haven’t had chipmunks around for years… goes right past my feet but didn’t want me to get too close to take a pic… apparently shy, lol…

steak was delicious, not sure how I felt about the zuchinni, but I did eat it… finished supper with salad and a few tiny new potatoes with dill…

all of the above jobs used to be taken care of by my beloved… some are easier than others and I continue to learn things…

this morning the table was covered with glitter as we toasted the new year over breakfast and then fixed a few things around the house before the kids headed out to visit with friends…

I set the table and prepared for our family New Year’s dinner of steak and lobster… we used to have it on New Year’s Eve but it has morphed into New Year’s Day…

used the Ferrero Roche tree as the centrepiece, as well as our dessert, lol… had fun setting the space up… even put out some glow-in-the-dark bracelets…

groups arrived at different times and last to arrive was the working son-in-law who joined us just after seven and headed right out to the garage to barbecue the steak and lobster…

it was beautifully done and went perfectly with the baked potatoes, escargot stuffed mushrooms, fried Brussels sprouts and Caesar salad…

the dessert tree was a hit as well… the kids cleaned up and we had some fun tasting chocolate…

fun time… as they were leaving we lit sparklers for them to enjoy…

been enjoying the ChefsPlate meals… they’ve worked well and may even be saving me a bit of money as each one provides two meals for me…

have learned a few tricks in the process… and I’ve also tried things I haven’t eaten or cared for before…

this one included orange zest…

didn’t think I liked zest of any kind but I’ve had three recipes with it, and enjoyed all of them…

even liking the spicy recipes…

the last set of meals that came had an issue, lol…

the recipe was supposed to be for Hawaiian Coconut Chicken, and I got the recipe card and the chicken, but all the ingredients that came in the bag were for Steak and Garlic Hasselback Potatoes… kind of sad because I was really looking forward to the chicken…

emailed and they sent me the recipe to make what was in the bag… I picked up a piece of steak and made it for my supper last night…

cool tip for the mini Hasselback potatoes was to cut them on a wooden spoon so they weren’t cut right through…

came out nice… even enjoyed the roasted peppers and olive herb salsa…

was pleased with their quick response and they also gave me credit for a meal…

excellent customer service…

for most of our married life we would celebrate New Year’s Eve with steak and lobster… started this tradition when we were newly married with a couple of longtime friends…

I can remember the first year, before we had kids, when we were in their yard and the old style charcoal bbq melted the snow all around it… the guys were in their shirtsleeves, it was giving off so much heat…

what great fun we had… over the years we kept up the tradition with appetizers early on, and then the steak and lobster very late in the evening, usually with at least one other couple… for much of the time the girls didn’t participate as New Year’s was our adult celebration…

when the girls were adults, they started to come for the dinner before going out with their friends, so we began eating earlier so it would fit with their plans…

the last few years before George died we would spend the remainder of the evening reading or watching tv and heading to bed after the midnight glass of bubbly…

last year I decided not to have steak and lobster on New Year’s Eve and instead had it on New Year’s Day with the family… I spent a quiet evening, watched fireworks at our community club from the dining room window… tonight I could hear the fireworks at The Forks…

I roasted a Cornish hen with mashed potatoes and cauliflower, with a carrot and raisin salad… a lovely remembrance… for years having a Cornish hen was a special treat for the two of us… a tasty reminder of my beloved…

the lobster is thawing in preparation for tomorrow’s dinner…

everyone in the family loves it now… not sure why we ever fed it to the little boys, lol…

likely I will be asleep at midnight…

barbecue, big girl pants, grocery shopping, inside, steak

spent the day inside…

went grocery shopping this morning… ended up with so much that they had to use a second cart to put the last of the bags in…

once I got home it took a while to get everything put away… but eventually it all found a home…

had wanted to go out for a walk but it was quite cool so I had a nap instead…

spent a few minutes with a tiny friend and did some laundry…

for my dinner I barbecued a steak…

20140518-204127-74487579.jpgrarely do I barbecue but I’ve been craving a steak for a while, so I put on the big girl pants and did it myself… baked a potato, cooked up some mushrooms, and made a tomato/Bocochini/basil salad…

it was excellent…

put the car back into the garage just as it began to spit…

a quiet evening of tv and then early to bed…

celebrated New Year’s Eve tonight as Cyndi and Ron head home to Ottawa tomorrow…

there is a fairly set menu for New Year’s Eve… escargot in mushroom caps followed by steak and lobster… this year we also had Caesar salad and twice stuffed potatoes…

nearly forgot to put the potatoes in this afternoon but Cyndi was quick to remind me, lol… had to make a few that didn’t have onions for some special people…

at our house Christmas was always for the kids, but New Year’s was for the adults… for a number of years we went to friends and brought the little kids with us and put them to bed before we began to organize the dinner… not sure that a year has gone by that we didn’t barbecue our dinner… many years later the girls would come by for dinner on their way out to their New Year’s Eve parties…

the obligatory picture...

now we tend to include the little boys in the celebration… tonight, adults had champagne and there was sparkling cider for the rest…

so far only one of the kids doesn’t want lobster, sigh… but it is wonderful to see them test new foods… we had some fun with the butter warmers as no matter where Crystal sits her warmer is always the coolest…

had a good time with my sleepover friend… we counted morning glories (8)… we walked to the A for “the special” and got the rye toast that Grandpa liked… we worked in the garden, like Grandpa would have… one of us had a hot tub while the other continued with the garden work, like Grandpa would have…

rearranged floating objects in the pond...

had a couple of helpers throughout the day and one of them did some work in the pond… got one of the plants to stay upright, trimmed up some dead material, pulled out a broken glass ball and rearranged all the floats and glass balls…

lily pads and floats...

fish were fed and numbers of people tried to find them, although they really hide well under the slate bridge…

got a couple of good shots of the floats and balls…

went for dimsum and after the kids left, watched some TV and made a lovely dinner of pan seared steak with pan-fried potatoes, mushrooms and onions, and fresh tiny tomatoes from the garden…

a lovely day all around…
