yesterday a friend brought me a large bag of fresh green beans…

this morning while I was watching a tv show I trimmed them all and put some into two pots…

I cooked the first batch for my lunch…

then the second for supper, with a few leftovers for tomorrow…

they were delicious…

I do love fresh veggies;-)…

when we got home from our time at the Airbnb we discovered twenty monarch caterpillars…

I had five milkweed plants but toward the end of their growing phase, the caterpillars were running out of leaves to eat…

they had stripped every leaf and I was able to cut some stalks from a friend’s yard…

I tied the new leaves to the old and we had just enough for them before hiding under leaves and building their chrysalides… two died, although there was still some leaves left…

we watched one caterpillar for a while once it moved into its j-shape but didn’t catch it weaving the chrysalis…

we only spotted two chrysalides, one of which vanished… not sure if it fell or something came along and ate it…

I watched it daily and then one day it turned black, which meant it was ready to eclose…

I watched all day, but nothing happened… late that afternoon I spotted the butterfly which had emerged…

it sat for quite a while before finally opening and closing its wings, but it was still on the iris leaf when I went to bed…

during the night the city came around and was spraying for mosquitoes…

In the morning it was hanging in a strange fashion and I was worried whether it would survive…

but, later I went out and she was gone;-)…

since then I’ve seen a total of eight butterflies flying through the garden;-)…

nature is amazing…

had a bit of a giggle as I was sitting on the deck eating breakfast and listening for bird songs…

when we were at the cottage we would hear a huge variety within just a few minutes…

of course that was also at migration time so I’m not sure how many you might hear now…

here, I can hear house sparrows, chickadees, the odd crow, squirrels yelling, and recycling/garbage trucks going up and down the lane, lol…

it has also been quieter lately because there is a Cooper’s Hawk hanging around, which makes for some very quiet times when all the birds and squirrels go into hiding…

you know it has left the area when all of a sudden large numbers of sparrows start getting drinks and gathering seed from the feeders, nattering the whole time…

this morning as I was sitting in the garden quietly reading my book, birds, squirrels and bunnies wandered through…

they are used to me sitting out there and don’t really mind me particularly as they pretty much know that I have no plans to hurt them…

although this morning I was a little miffed with the squirrels because they have figured out a way to get onto the two bird feeders that I thought were safe from them, sigh…

but all in all, a wonderful garden sanctuary;-)…

it was twelve years ago today that I had surgery for a hernia and a hysterectomy… it took a while to get organized as two different surgeons were required to work together so that both issues could be taken care of at the same time…

it was particularly difficult because it was the first time I went through a serious health issue without my beloved there to support and look after me…

thinking back to that time, I realize how far I have come and how well I am doing now…

I still miss him every single day…

I’ve been trying to figure out how to get another umbrella on the back deck to provide shade mid afternoon without a whole out of success…

I have an old umbrella, but no pole or stand for it… we went looking but weren’t able to find anything that might work and keep it stable…

in the end we purchased a 3-point sail… we also picked up a lot of rope to be able to connect the corners…

after considerable trial and error, we got it up and I think it is going to work quite well…

and it looks good;-)…

all of the rain has made some of the veggie garden plants quite happy…

the tomatoes are doing well and growing bigger each day…

the peapods are filling out rather nicely and I had my first peas… from just one pod, lol…

the beans are growing up the arch but don’t have any flowers yet and the cucumbers are very slow in flowering…

I think that I may need to plant more beans and even cucumbers… sadly the butternut squash seed did not produce…

and, finally the basil has started to fill the pot;-)…

we’ve tidied up the walkway between the pond and garden and I had swept the path a few days ago…

yesterday I looked at it and discovered that it was once again covered in dirt, sigh…

as I watched the sparrows having their dust baths it occurred to me what the problem was, lol…

today I swept it again, pretty much knowing that it won’t stay tidy for any length of time…

maybe I will put down that fancy magic sand that turns solid once it has water put on it…

it will be interesting to see how the birds respond…

the clematis on the south side of the house has been outdoing itself this season… maybe it likes all the rain, lol…

I would say there are maybe a hundred buds or blossoms… and that is after two serious thunderstorms which knocked tons of petals off…

came across this photo from July, 2013…

at that point it was probably five or six years old… before this one we had probably planted five or six that all died…

nice to have the comparison as it is easy to forgot how much something has grown…
