I went around the house and counted my orchids…

there are five in the dining room, all of which are more or less in a dormant state… I went to move two of them and discovered that they had put roots into each other’s pot… how cool is that… reminded me of the amazing banyan tree in Lahaina…

there are seven in the living room, three small ones and four large ones…

right now, this is the only one blooming;-)…

the other three full size ones in the living room have buds starting;-)…

a photo of the banyan tree in Lahaina came up in my Facebook feed this morning so I pulled out a few more…

I’ve been thinking of this particular tree for quite a while… it is the largest banyan tree in Hawaii, and covers an entire block… the aerial roots are astonishing… it is stunning, and also one of the most peaceful places I have been…

the area is filled with visitors, many, like we were, there from out of the country, but lots of regulars as well… a gathering place for lunch and work breaks, there were many of the town’s workforce in the space… it is also clearly a place where those who have very little spend their time… what was also obvious was how they cared for the place and treated it, and everyone there, with respect and kindness…

we visited it a few times while we stayed in Lahaina and it provided a wonderful break… the weather was very hot and it always provided shade and a slightly cooler place to be… each day as the sun goes down the tree is filled with the sound of hundreds of birds gathering there for the night…

before we left the town, it was the last place we stopped, to soak up the amazing feeling…

I took this panorama of a corner of the block…

this beauty of nature reminded me of Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island, another breathtaking place which I will never forget…

I hope you have memories of a special tree…

great final day on the island… after breakfast and a song by the chickens and rooster, we went snorkelling at a lovely beach where I saw lots of fish, although no turtles… I did have a little issue with the rocks as I came out of the water and have a small cut and bruise on a finger;-(…

got a final photo of our car which got us around splendidly…

from there we checked out of the hotel and went and had lunch under the banyan tree… it was lovely…

we drove across the island to the heliport close to the airport and finally had our helicopter ride… such beautiful views everywhere we looked…

picked up some chocolate and headed to the airport where we are now waiting to board our flight…

our last full day in paradise… and it lived up to its reputation…

we were up rather early and walked along the sand and then over to the banyan tree...

because it was so early there were very few people around… just a few street folk who we had seen on each of our excursions there… it was nice to see them there as they were just quietly going about their business, not harassing any visitors, but clearly appreciating the specialness of the space…

the space has that sacred feeling which reminds me of a forest of trees on Vancouver Island… it is located right on the edge of the highway but when you step into Cathedral Grove you feel enveloped by a sense of mystery and peace…

I felt that each time we have been at the banyan tree, but especially this morning…

we both walked along gently touching the trunks… there are sixteen in total for this one tree…

sadly, over the years individuals have carved names and signs into the various trunks, but I barely see that… just the majesty…

what an amazing piece of creation…
