took this photo of a dahlia in the garden getting ready to bloom…

although I just bought these this spring it made me think about the ones we bought in 2011 in Courtenay…

we went to visit the Dahlia man… he was very old and lived on a property at the edge of Courtney/Comox… I can’t remember the man’s name, but George would have… he remembered all that type of stuff…

we must have spent two hours with him… looking at all the dahlias which were blooming and then going through his boxes and ziplock bags filled with tubers… he and my beloved talked and talked, lol…

we brought home some of the tubers and he sent more later…

they bloomed beautifully and at the end of the season we lifted them and packed them up for the next year… sadly they were put in ziplock bags and in the spring were all mushy… we hadn’t let them dry sufficiently before bagging them…

both of my girls have developed the same ability to talk to anyone anywhere and know all about them by the end of the conversation… makes me giggle… so not me…

air conditioning, beloved, big girl pants, cold, cool, George, morning glories, purple, widow, windows

last week I gave in and turned on the air conditioner to cool down the house…

George and I would always struggle over when to put it on, at what temperature and when to turn it off…

at night I would want to turn it off and open the windows to let in fresh air… he would want to keep it on with all the windows closed to keep the cool/cold air in the house…

made for interesting conversations, lol… I would be so happy to still be able to have one of those conversations…

another negative is once you get into the cool house you don’t want to go outside again…

since turning it on, I’ve been leaving the house closed up during the day and the temperature not too cold… at night I’ve been opening the windows to let in the fresh air…

this shot of one of the morning glories today reminded me not to hide in the house but to get outside and enjoy the peace and beauty of the garden…

early this morning I picked my first pepper of the season…

looks like another two or three are starting… funny thing is I don’t really love green peppers, lol…

the morning glories are blooming all along the deck… up till today they were only flowering in one spot…

they remind me of when George would bring me pictures of whichever one was blooming every morning when I spent six weeks in the hospital…

it was so sweet…

over lunch we went to the Farmers Market and I got a great bag full of treats…

radishes, tiny cucumbers, peas, new potatoes and yellow beans (which we ate before I took the picture)…

summer is so precious…

beloved, big girl pants, camping, clematis, family, flowers, George, grandsons, memories, moments, Palomino, pop-up, purple, trailer, widow

we’ve been searching for a trailer for camping for the last while… looked at a few options but they weren’t just what we were wanting…

on Friday I went with my son-in-law and the younger grandsons to look at a pop-up trailer just outside the city…

we found the place rather easily, lol…

there was the most beautiful clematis in the driveway, and I had to take some pictures…

we had a look at the trailer which was set up in the garage…

although it is bigger, it reminded me of the trailer that we had for many years and the great camping trips we enjoyed with it…

we decided to buy it… it was a bit of a process, but between my credit union and the one in the town, we managed to get the funds so we wouldn’t have to make another trip to pick up the trailer…

when we got back to the house where it was, I was chatting with the woman who was selling it, as her dad and my son-in-law were taking it down…

she was talking about how her dad was such a support for her and I said something about my husband being the same for my daughters… then I mentioned he had died five years ago… she looked at me oddly and said George… at which point we realized that she had worked with my beloved… she had thought I looked familiar but was confused when my son-in-law had the same name, lol…

makes the trailer even more special…

the final giggle for me was the brand name on it… anyone who knows my son-in-law will see the connection…

he worked at the Palomino Club for years… we didn’t even notice this until we got it home…

looking forward to family fun and memories with this new addition….

clearly this was meant to be… serendipity…

up a little early to be sure I made it to the dentist’s office on time for my cleaning and check-up… looked out the front window and spotted two bunnies across the street, so I had to run and get the camera to take a few photos…

great way to start a Friday;-)…

only waited a few minutes to get in to see the hygienist and everything went well… even the x-rays…

my daughter called me to see if I wanted to go with them to see a movie after work… she picked me up and off we went to their house for Chinese food before the show…

she showed me her new tattoo… George’s signature on her wrist… she’s been thinking about having it done since he died…

at the movie I ate a whole bag of popcorn and am feeling just a little sick now, lol…

they dropped me at my car at the office and on my way home I stopped and got gas for Shadow…

took a picture of the moon while I was waiting for the fill and then when I was home and looked out the window, I noticed the star/planet just below and to the left…

not a great shot of the moon but you can see the planet…

very full day…

excited to see the fish swimming around in the pond tonight…

they’ve been outside for a few months now, but have spent all their time hiding under the bridge…

when I went out to take a photo tonight they were swimming around in the open area… yay…

as I was looking for a title for this blog, I came across this pic of the pond near the end of the construction…

still makes me laugh a bit when  I think back to having the pond reconstructed… it had been leaking for a few years so I thought having it redone would be a bit of a memorial for George… he loved the ponds…

so happy the fish are finally getting more comfortable… it is quite amazing how much I miss them when they move out to the pond, lol…

bright spots in my day…

I took a few photos of the flowers that a colleague brought me yesterday from the Farmers Market... a lovely treat… particularly love delphiniums and calla lilies…

brought them home with me…

a colleague got this beautiful rose in such a sweet vase today… had to take a picture…

my gardener grandson came by to do some yard work… when it was raining he did some organizing in the basement…

some say he looks like George and today he reminded me of him as he came in a few times with injuries and needed a bandage…

laughed because the bandaid package has lasted much longer without my beloved being around… he always had a bandaid somewhere on his body, lol…

so many special moments in the day…

been thinking of my dad a lot lately…

he died nearly thirty years ago… he lived with emphysema from the time I was a teenager…

he did as much as he could, but spent the weekends recovering from the week and trying to build up the energy to make it through the next week…

when I turned sixteen, he and I bought a new car together and I began driving him to and from work every day… which also meant that I got to drive to school each day;-)…

he loved sports and we often attended athletic events at the arena and watched whatever sport might be on tv…

he was the person who taught me to appreciate each person or team’s efforts and applaud everyone’s performance, whether they were the one you were rooting for or not…

to this day I do the same…

he started me on my love of office supplies… when I was young I would occasionally spend a weekend morning with him at work and organize his desk, lol…

he spent a good portion of his working life helping people figure out what type of work they would be best at, and he was very good at it…

when my beloved and I were first married, he would go grocery shopping with me and add a roast or some other treat to my bag… at first I felt bad that he did this, until I realized it was something he could still do for us… by that time he couldn’t manage physical things like home repairs any longer… buying us a treat was his way of supporting us…

he was a very special man… my girls were not yet teenagers when he died, much like my grandsons who were so young when my beloved left us… maybe this is why I try to keep memories of George alive so that the boys remember him…

a very rare professionally taken picture of mom and dad…

the new neighbours have put up some wind chimes… the kind that I like, not the high pitched tinkling ones…

wonder how long I will refer to the neighbours as new, lol…

reminds me of the wonderful ones that we had… they were a gift from friends and had a lovely deep sound…

one year we decided to make similar ones as our Christmas gift for friends…

George took ours apart to create the template and worked on them for weeks…

we had great difficulty finding the correct type of copper, but eventually all the bits and pieces were gathered up…

during that time he came down with an infection which damaged his heart… he just finished the gifts in time, as he was feeling so sick…

he never did put ours back together… I think the struggle to get the gifts done really tarnished his love of them…

a couple of months ago I found the bits for our original set, but apparently some of the pieces aren’t there…

I can’t figure out how to put it together but with the lovely sound coming from next door I think it’s okay…

been thinking of some fun times with my beloved…

for years we tried to grow clematis… at one point we had one that grew for two years along the neighbour’s garage… then it died off…

we tried everything from putting rocks over the roots, to digging deeper holes, to trying different varieties… but nothing seemed to work…

we would laugh because one of our neighbours had one that took up the whole side of her garage, lol…

for the last seven years or so this clematis has grown up the side of the house…

I’m always so excited when it comes up again… it is still rather scrawny looking…

but here it is with blossoms that are nearly ready to open…

what a treat…
