when we were working in the garage recently, I found a collection of rocks and put some in a container to bring in the house for the smallest fish tank….
the fish didn’t want to move as I was putting the rocks into the tank, which was missing coverage on the bottom…
once done, the tank looked better and the fish seemed to approve;-)…
last year this tank held pond plants, but as the fish have grown, it seems like a good idea to provide a bit more room…
when we were in the garden on Sunday, we removed a ton of leaves from the pond… always makes me think of the lovely neighbours we have had over the years, being as how the tree that sheds those leaves is located in their yard, lol…
there were still numerous ones left, but we were able to dig down past them and catch three fish to bring into the house…
I wanted to do a bit of a test in the biggest tank to be sure that the water was safe for them…
after they acclimatized to the house temperature they made it into their condo…
for the last few weeks I’ve been working on getting the condos (fish tanks), ready for the move from garden to house…
when the fish moved outdoors in the spring, I didn’t clean up the tanks, sigh…
so, it started with cleaning the tank that held the plants last winter… I’ve decided to use it for fish, as the fish were getting a bit crowded in the two tanks…
got it cleaned and then a few days went by before I faced the two big tanks…
had to use the wetvac to remove all the water from the big tanks and dump it down the toilet in small batches… that took quite a bit of time and effort…
next I had to scrub them both down… then I brought in the hose and filled all three tanks up… another slow process…
I had to purchase a pump for the newest tank… as I hooked them up, the biggest pump would not work…
finally, after numerous attempts, it started working and now all three tanks are running and cleaning the water…
it will be weeks before the fish move in, but the tanks will be ready for them…
the funniest thing is realizing how much noise they make, after being silent all summer…
recently a friend messaged me asking if I might take some of their fish… they were looking for homes for three goldfish and a koi as they are going to focus on guppies and tetras…
I thought about it and agreed to take the goldfish, but not the koi… they have different requirements and also grow very large…
they started to look for a place that would take the koi and eventually were able to find a home for it and the largest goldfish at a city college which has a number of ponds…
they brought the two remaining goldfish over on Friday…
they have now joined the fish in the large tank and seem quite happy…
I think they will enjoy the pond when they get to move out there;-)…
cleaning the pumps is not one of my favourite jobs, but I have gotten pretty good with it now that I have no choice, lol…
both tanks were getting murky which is the sign that the entire pump needs to be cleaned… that means the tube and the three different filters in each pump…
yucky, but necessary to get done… small one went fine… I don’t even make a face when I am rinsing them by hand whereas before I wouldn’t even consider touching them…
those big girl pants…
when I dealt with the big pump it was cleaned and put back without any issues…
but, when I plugged it back in nothing happened, sigh…
tried plugging it into a few other outlets, but no luck… brought it back into the kitchen, dumped the water out of it and removed the actual pump, which is quite tiny…
then I took the two pieces apart, used a Q-tip to clean both and rinsed it out without getting the outside of it wet…
got it back together, plugged it in and it worked, phew… when the pumps stop working it is rather worrisome because there is the concern about the stress on the fish in the tank…
now to see how long it takes to clear up the water and get rid of the murkiness…
