had trouble staying focussed on my book on Wednesday as there was a lot of activity across the way…

two workers spent the entire morning stringing a new wire…

it was so cold I felt bad for them, but they seemed comfortable as I watched…

the most interesting thing was what appeared to be a torpedo shaped object which one person pulled along the line… I think it was winding the new wire around the old ones…

my beloved would have been able to tell me exactly what it was and how it worked, lol…

but, all of those goings-on really made it hard to concentrate on my book;-)…

another few projects got taken care of…

the wooden bird picture that my middle grandson gave me about a year ago has finally made it onto the wall… we had to pick up wire to use as it is heavy and the usual fishing line wasn’t going to hold it up…

looks great and I am so proud of him as he did a good job of making it…

then we put a new sweep on the bottom of the back door so that cold air isn’t flowing down into the basement… bit of a process, but it was finally complete… better than it was, for sure…

a strip of carpet got cut and repositioned so that feet won’t be on concrete on the way to the bathroom, lol…

the final piece of work was cutting and installing a tile over the light in the bathroom…

a lot of work got done;-)… I am blessed…

Saturday the sun came out for most of the afternoon… wonderful after two days of snow…

watched the hydro power wires from the lane to the house off and on all day…

early in the day I noticed that two of the cedar branches were hanging on the wire…

checked online and with family but couldn’t decide whether it was safe to go out and knock the snow off so the branches would get off the wire and there wouldn’t be any problem with the house’s power…

as the day went on the snow melted and first one, then the other lifted off the wire… made me very happy…

many cedar branches in the yard have been bent way over but it looks as if they will all recover… that is not the outcome for many, many trees in the city;-(…

so the smoke detector was installed on Thursday afternoon… and I am loving it… a cute little ring of blue (a nightlight) appears when I walk under it… so far no alarms, which is good, nor has it talked to me yet…

on Friday my son-in-law went out and found the Nest thermostat at a good price and on Saturday he began the process of installing it…

it was a long complicated piece of business… by 7 pm that night, it was 63 degrees Fahrenheit in the house because after the first install, and putting back the original thermostat, the furnace refused to circulate any heat… the furnace service people came out around 8 pm and discovered that a fuse had blown, so they went back to the shop and brought a new one and installed it… this particular fellow didn’t know how to install the Nest product so we left it so that the house could warm up… it was rather chilly…

on Tuesday my son-in-law tried again, after he had gone out and bought more fuses, in case we blew another one in the process of hooking up the new thermostat…

once again, the new one wouldn’t work so he reinstalled the old one… he walked over to the furnace company’s office and left a message for the owner to give us a call… a while later we heard back and they figured out that there needed to be another wire…

which meant that the drywall ceiling in the basement hall had to come down so he could run the cable… he removed it and cleaned everything up beautifully, but by then it was too late to move to the next step…

today, while I was at work, he was able to pull the wire (without cutting into the plaster in the hall, yay), connect everything, and set the temperature, because it finally worked perfectly…

we added it to my app and I can now change the temperature from my phone… although it does say it is -8 outside, whereas the weather app says it is -22, lol…

seemed like such a simple little job, but he didn’t stop until it was done;-)… I sure am blessed…

took this picture of the sky when I got home and was planning to write about the sad fact that it is getting dark earlier every day…

who knew that I’d be writing about electricity instead… as I was making my supper I heard a loud noise on the deck… looked out to see the electrical wires had pulled away from the house… were still attached, but hanging at least a foot lower than before…

and about six blue jays flying off the wire… think they must have been the last straw to pull the wire away…

only caught this one … very odd to see so many of them in one place…

power was still on, but I decided to call the Hydro emergency number to see if someone needed to come and check the situation out…

I always dislike calling emergency numbers because there are likely real emergencies they need to be dealing with, not my little problems…

anyway, they did think it was an emergency and a truck arrived about two hours later…

it was still light when they arrived just after nine… he said I’d need an electrician to fix the problem, but that he would turn off the power for a few minutes, remove the piece of vinyl, tape up some wiring, and turn the power back on until I could get the electrician to come, likely tomorrow… because Hydro can’t fix the electricity, just turn it on or off, sigh…

it was getting darker as he worked and my young electrician friend, who lives close by, said he would come over to see what had to be done… he couldn’t do anything until later tomorrow as he didn’t have his tools with him…

he arrived and once he saw what the problem was, felt he could do a fix tonight… we searched in the garage and found a small piece of 2×4 and he went home and got a drill and some longer screws… I could only find 3 inch ones in the garage… although I bet there are some out there somewhere… George had just about anything you could need in that garage… it is one place I haven’t been able to go through and clean out since his death…

Lane, the very nice Hydro man, did what he had to do and my friend found screws and was able to connect the mast (maybe?) back up and then the Hydro fellow hooked the lines up and turned the power on… by then it was pitch dark…

the whole process only took about an hour…

events like this remind me that I am lucky to have people to call on but that my being a little old widow lady might have provided me with some additional power to get a bit of extra help, lol…

so, I guess I did talk about the dark, after all…
