Friday, we started our day at Stella’s on Portage, before visiting the Winnipeg Art Gallery…

after avocado toast with poached eggs and hashbrowns, I finished my meal with a haystack (or fiddle diddle), and I even shared, lol… yum…

once at the WAG, we left our jackets in lockers and explored… so much art to see… my favourite was this carving…

we had a snack in the Katita cafe and wandered around the vault…

it was spectacular;-)…

from there we hurried home, grabbed her bag, and dropped her at the airport for her flight home…

what a wonderful way to end our time together;-)…

on Wednesday, my daughter and I spent six hours at The Leaf…

upon arrival we were surprised and delighted to discover a coat check for members… my coat was free and we paid $2 for my guest…

we were a bit early and shared a Rice Krispies square and hot chocolate while we waited for our entry time to the Biomes…

we had a great time in the Tropical Biome where we came across the head gardener and had an excellent conversation about the cacao trees and chocolate…

we visited the Mediterranean Biome to see the Fleurs de Villes displays and met and talked with at least four of the designers…

lunch at Gather was a delicious tomato bisque and grilled cheese focaccia for me, and duck poutine for my daughter…

for dessert she had the honey cake and I enjoyed the squash creme brûlée, which was delicious, lol…

back to visit both biomes where we learned about orchids from a regular gardener talk in the Tropical Biome, talked with two of the zoo staff who shared lots of information about the butterflies and the 52 koi in the pond…

we also got to hear a few violin pieces by Gwen Hoebig, who was one of the models for the FDV displays… my daughter took this photo…

it was hard to pick a favourite, but this time I chose the hoop dancer…

Monday we celebrated a birthday…

we had lunch at Gather Craft Kitchen & Bar…

the food was tasty and we had an excellent time…

we sang and presented the birthday bag, which was freshly made by one of our crafty group… our last one had completely worn out…

had a most wonderful visit with a dear friend who I haven’t seen for ages…

one of those people where the conversation just continues as though you’d seen one another the day before…

lots of talk about plants and gardens and how integral they are for both of us…

health and family also were covered…

and I received a container of delicious date squares…

so blessed to have time with special people…

finally got around to making some red lentil curry…

hadn’t made this recipe for a very long time, so had to follow the recipe so as not to miss anything, particularly as there are many spices in it…

ended up using two pots so that it wouldn’t overflow the pan I started with, lol…

five and a half containers in total…

my housemate and I spent quite some time in the kitchen Sunday afternoon… someone suggested I might be a kitchen hoarder;-(…

we went through all the bottom cabinets, cleaned, added to the pass-along box, and threw out or recycled excess plastic…

took most of the afternoon but it looks lovely and all the shelves are newly organized…

I’m hoping that I can remember where everything is now, lol…

for New Year’s dinner we tried something new…

we had prime rib… for many years we would have steak and lobster with twice-stuffed potatoes…

so this was fun to try… cooking the prime rib was interesting… first, it had to sit on the counter for six hours to reach room temperature, then it went into the oven at 500°F for half an hour, and finally the oven was turned off and it sat inside it for two hours…

quite the process, but it came out perfect for those of us who enjoy rare meat;-)…

there were mashed potatoes, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts with carrots, little Yorkshire puddings, and gravy…

delicious…

and this was my lunch today… which included prime rib and avocado… no lobster though…

on New Year’s day in the morning, I went out the patio doors and shovelled the decks…

then I walked around to the front and did the sidewalks and steps…

I used the shovel by the back door and it was very noisy, lol… it has a metal piece along the front and makes a scraping noise as it is used…

the one I normally use is plastic and much quieter…

I started at the back because I was waiting for my first-footer to arrive so didn’t use the front door…

twice during the day people commented that I was the only person they knew who followed this tradition, and also that when I was gone, the tradition would probably go with me, lol…
