last week I watched a hawk chase a sparrow down the lane… I didn’t hear any screeching, so was hopeful that the sparrow made it to safety…
on Saturday, I was quietly sitting on the back deck, drinking my tea and reading when I heard a kerfuffle…
suddenly, a juvenile Cooper’s hawk came off the shelf in the pergola by the driveway gate… it had a sparrow in its claws…
it flew to the ledge on the main deck with its prize… after sitting there for quite a few minutes I walked over to get it to leave the garden… I got very close to it before it finally decided to fly up to the wires above the deck, and then, away…
the whole time it was in the garden the sparrows and chickadees were sounding the alarm…
as we declutter the basement, we have found a few things to move into other areas of the house… and our goal is to set the items up as they get moved, lol…
most recently, a light fixture that originally came from my parents’ apartment made its way into the den…
it got screwed into the wall, a smart bulb was added to it and connected to Google Home…
working nicely and it will be great for guests when the couch transforms to a bed;-)…
this picture came up on my Facebook memories recently…
I can still remember that day… we were in Courtenay and drove up Mount Washington… there was no one else around as it was summer… we sat at the bottom of the ski hill for a very long time as we were both afraid of heights…
but we decided to go for it…
we got on the chairlift but the person didn’t put the safety bar down… we realized this as we were moving upwards… I think that the bars along the back and beside me, that I was holding onto for dear life, probably had dents from the grip I had on them😳…
there are no pictures because of the death grip… we were both terrified…
when we arrived at the top the staff person didn’t seem that worried about it, but did say they would ensure that the bar was put in the correct position when we descended…
there was still snow on the ground and the views were beautiful, but I was still nervous about going back down…
of course, we had no choice about going down… after being safely secured correctly, we made the trip down and I even enjoyed some of the views, lol…
but, once we made it back to town, we stopped and sat in a coffee shop for quite a while to let our nerves settle;-)…
the current iteration of the pond is ten years old…
hard to believe that much time has passed…
this is how it looked just as it was completed…
after it was finished, they had to come back and deal with leaking and runoff…nearly all of the plants have changed over time, lol… and I have changed the slate around the edge of the pond for large river rocks…
it still loses water when the waterfall is running and this year I have left if off for a good portion of the time… I also think the fish are out and about more when it isn’t running, lol… I do have a bubbler going all the time…
this year the water lilies are extremely happy… they continue to produce blooms daily, it is both amazing and delightful…
today, I turned the waterfall on and realized that I’d been missing it, and how well it dilutes other sounds in the neighbourhood…
I was surprised yesterday morning when I looked out the window to see the hammock stand on its back against the planter… clearly the wind had lifted the umbrella and blew it over…
when I went out I saw that the umbrella on the top was perfectly fine so I took it off… the wind has been very strong since Tuesday and may continue for a number of days… a section of the edging had broken right off…
the umbrella went into the garage and I was able to put the stand back up… not going to put the umbrella back on until the weather improves…
