big girl pants, commercial, Goose Spit, holiday, memories, on the road again, road, widow

tonight I saw a commercial on tv that had the Willie Nelson song On the Road Again in it… it was about a particular brand of car, although I can’t remember which one…

brought back so many memories… really old ones, lol…

George had made a cassette tape (see how long ago!) that we would put on every time we left on vacation…

the first song was On the Road Again… and when we got into the car and it started playing it was the sign that we were on holidays…

I don’t remember any of the other songs, just that both of us enjoyed them… eventually I think the girls even liked the tape…

keeping me steady as I stepped into Goose Spit…

I also remember hearing this song as part of his memorial service… my nephew put together a video using pictures that the girls chose from our many photo albums… this song was one of the two that he used…

supporting me, as always, as I rested on the bench…

this is one of my favourite photos… it was at our younger daughter’s wedding and I was recovering after a six week hospital stay and six weeks at home…

I continue on the road, but now it is a solo journey… pretty sure he’s proud of me and my big girl pants…

this morning I had a memory on Facebook of my youngest grandson, as a baby, swinging in a park close by… there was also a picture of he, his older brother and my beloved on the back deck that same day…

just last Friday, when the boys were here, we talked about swinging in that very park…

today, the kids came downtown, spent a few minutes playing Pokemon Go at the Millennium Library Park, and then picked me up for lunch…

we went for dimsum at Kum Koon Garden, our favourite…

they have a stunning salt water fish tank and my grandson took a few pictures for me…

he had my phone because we share a Pokemon Go account so whenever we’re together he is checking out the game, lol…

the point of this story is how lucky I am to have the opportunity to spend time with my kids and grandkids… and how lucky we both were to be able to make memories with our grandchildren…

been another full day…

up early, took down the tent and packed the vehicles…

then we headed to the beach for our last day of water fun…

went fishing to start the day off… son-in-law caught two Jackfish which we tossed back as they weren’t very big… amazing how long the little boys last without complaining about being bored…

then we spent time on the beach as numerous family members arrived… it was really hot… the shore was crazy full of boats and people, although there were not nearly as many watercraft on the lake…

saw a few native water lilies as we entered the channel…

four boats and a seadoo crossed the lake together to the Death Swing, where my daughter cut her heel on the propeller, bled a bit and it will be irritable for a while whenever she bends her ankle, but she’s okay…

great fun watching people swing off the ropes into the water…

there were probably fifty boats there… great calm area for a refreshing swim…

saw an eagle as we headed back across the lake…

last few minutes of our ride across…

not sure if I’ll get any more in this year…

dinner at The Nest and heading home…

lots of wonderful fun memories…

Atlanta Botanical Garden, big girl pants, calendar, Chihuly, Chihuly Garden and Glass, hat, memories, widow

this morning I was thinking about our time in Atlanta just a few weeks ago…

very happy while I was there to pick up a 2017 calendar… also picked up some beautiful notecards and a Chihuly hat…

just a few days ago I turned over my 2016 calendar to this picture…

another beauty… makes checking the date a very pleasant experience… and a reminder of those wonderful visits to the Atlanta Botanical Garden and our amazing visit to Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle…

I had picked up a couple of novels before heading to Atlanta and started reading this one…

was blown away by her reference to Chihuly as I read on the flight to Ottawa on the way to Atlanta…

been thinking of people I know who are struggling with health issues and loss…

brought back so many memories of when George died and the difficult period following…

makes me quiet and rather sad… not really how I like to be…

even the beautiful morning sky couldn’t bring me out of this little funk…

as I think of my friends I am also going to focus on the beauty around me…

9/11, Big Apple, big girl pants, chocolate, Eatalia, flowers, High Line, memories, NYC, vacation, widow

another busy day, but tons of fun…

we had cold pressed juice for breakfast at the hotel and then broke into two groups… two went with their main goal shopping for gifts for those at home… we went out with a plan to see Eatalia and take a walk on the High Line…

we started out and stopped by the 9/11 memorial where we took a few pictures… was very interested in the story of the survivor tree which was found buried in the rubble, moved to a nursery, damaged in a storm and replanted on the grounds and is thriving…

the sun shining on this rose with the huge sculptural dove in the background came out beautifully…

we stopped at a rather high end mall and found a Tory Burch bracelet for my Fitbit… I am so excited about this because I have only seen them online and wasn’t sure of the sizing so hadn’t wanted to order one… the young woman who helped us provided great service and was able to find a single silver one in the store which fit perfectly…

so it was my present to me… when she heard it was my birthday she gave me a great deal…

my plan for the day included taking as many flower pictures as possible, so I was happy to come across this flower shop…

there was a tulip festival taking place and some beautiful purple and orange ones jumped out at me…

a nice picture of the Flat Iron Building with my daughter and a blooming cherry tree in Madison Park… just before we headed into Eatalia…

what fun we had there wandering through all of the sections and having a spectacular lunch…

didn’t see Mario though, lol…

from there we found our fifth chocolate shop of the trip… and picked up a few items to bring home… and while we were there we shared a piece of coconut chocolate birthday cake which was delicious… this from a person who isn’t fond of cake, lol…

on to the High Line which we walked for about half an hour… hot and sunny the whole way…

met up with the other two girls, had a snack and headed to the airport… shared a delicious birthday supper at Prime and made it onto the plane for the first leg of our flight…

our second flight got us home just after midnight…

most everyone we met was welcoming, informative and provided excellent service…

we walked, rode the subway, took taxis and flew, all in one day…

so many memories of four days in the Big Apple and the many little bites we took…

yesterday daffodils were delivered as part of a cancer fundraiser that we’ve supported for a number of years…

this year we ordered a few extra bunches in memory of our colleague who died last year…

it was lovely to see them when I arrived this morning… brought back good and bad memories…

she was a lovely person and I think of her often… she loved orange and yellow too…

big girl pants, Chihuly, excited, homemade, macaroni, memories, Seattle, unforgettable, white sauce

yesterday my daughter in Ottawa asked for my recipe for homemade macaroni and cheese…

it is one of her favourites and we didn’t have an opportunity to have it while they were home…

it is in a duo tang from high school home ec class that I keep on the shelf in the kitchen with my other cookbooks…

excited that she wanted to make it… came out very nice and they enjoyed it…

the white sauce in that recipe is my go to… I can’t even think how many times I’ve made it for various dishes… best thing I ever learned in home economics…

the most exciting thing today was getting to turn the calendar to January…

I purchased this calendar in August and have been waiting to get to use it… the last one I had was for 2014 and I didn’t open it until January only to discover that it had the previous November and December included… was so excited that this one would have the same thing…

but it didn’t… been waiting since September to get to a full size calendar…

I just love Dale Chihuly’s work… one of the most memorable moments for me was standing in Chihuly Garden and Glass at the base of the Seattle Space Needle and hearing his voice as he walked into the room we were in… to listen as he answered students’ questions and then get a picture with him… was like meeting a rock star…

funny what makes an unforgettable memory…

beloved, big girl pants, celebration, charcoal, Cornish hen, fireworks, friends, lobster, memories, New Year's Eve, steak, tradition

for most of our married life we would celebrate New Year’s Eve with steak and lobster… started this tradition when we were newly married with a couple of longtime friends…

I can remember the first year, before we had kids, when we were in their yard and the old style charcoal bbq melted the snow all around it… the guys were in their shirtsleeves, it was giving off so much heat…

what great fun we had… over the years we kept up the tradition with appetizers early on, and then the steak and lobster very late in the evening, usually with at least one other couple… for much of the time the girls didn’t participate as New Year’s was our adult celebration…

when the girls were adults, they started to come for the dinner before going out with their friends, so we began eating earlier so it would fit with their plans…

the last few years before George died we would spend the remainder of the evening reading or watching tv and heading to bed after the midnight glass of bubbly…

last year I decided not to have steak and lobster on New Year’s Eve and instead had it on New Year’s Day with the family… I spent a quiet evening, watched fireworks at our community club from the dining room window… tonight I could hear the fireworks at The Forks…

I roasted a Cornish hen with mashed potatoes and cauliflower, with a carrot and raisin salad… a lovely remembrance… for years having a Cornish hen was a special treat for the two of us… a tasty reminder of my beloved…

the lobster is thawing in preparation for tomorrow’s dinner…

everyone in the family loves it now… not sure why we ever fed it to the little boys, lol…

likely I will be asleep at midnight…

last night I was quite excited to look out and see that the solar powered lights glowing…

that means the sun had been shining during the day…

really enjoying the sunlight as much as possible… today I was commenting on the sunlight streaming through the office windows…

was very pleased tonight when I arrived home and looked at the garage windows… had to get out my phone to take a few pictures…

a few years ago I was at a friend’s house and got some amazing shots of hoarfrost on her garage windows… so these pictures reminded me of that special evening when we decorated her living room for Christmas…

frost is amazingly beautiful…

as I walked up to the door my phone chirped with a text from another friend who had just cuddled up on her couch with a crocheted blanket I had made for her a year or so ago and wanted to tell me how she enjoyed it…

lovely memories to finish off a long week…
