seems like I have been working in the computer room forever, lol…

every time I think I’ve done all the papers, I find another box or bag, sigh…

this time I came across two very old photos…

one of my mom… she was a beauty;-)…

and one of my Auntie Vi, one of my dad’s sisters… she and my uncle lived in a tiny house in River Heights which was packed full of knickknacks… every surface was covered, lol… she made all kinds of things… she painted ceramics, knit numerous things, and always had delicious treats to eat whenever you arrived at the house…

she is also the reason that I stand at the window and wave to everyone as they leave my house just as she always did…

I put a poppy on the front door…

had to search through the containers at the front door to find it as I haven’t been out anywhere recently where I could get a few…

I did this last year as well…

because I am not going out much there isn’t anywhere to wear it… seems like a small act, but the best I can do…

and I made an online donation to the mypoppy.ca campaign…

apparently I chose my mom when I did the same thing a few years ago… made me giggle because I first thought of doing one for my dad, lol… they both served during World War II…

the above information comes from Then and Now, The History of La Salle, Manitoba…

so, I went ahead and made a second donation in his honour;-)…

have to be fair, lol…

today, as I was eating my cauliflower soup for lunch, I was thinking about my mom…

she loved curry… at that time it was not one of my favourites, but yesterday I popped some into the soup…

tasted pretty good and the smell certainly brought back memories of times with her;-)…

spent time doing laundry today…

made me think of my mom… she loved doing laundry… she liked being able to get stains out, the tidy piles of clean and fresh smelling clothing, and the pleasure of knowing that items were ready for everyone to wear…

she worked with a wringer washer for many years…

I had to search to find a photo of what the one we had looked like… something like this one which I found on the internet…

during her last years she had to use a laundry room just across from their apartment…

I wonder how she would have liked the new washers and driers…

I don’t dislike doing laundry, but certainly don’t love it, lol…

on Tuesday my arm started to ache as the day went along… by the end of the day it was really sore…

possibly a bit of carpal tunnel;-(… I’ve had it a few times over the years…

before bed I dug out the wrist braces that were my mom’s… put one on for the night…

have worn it all day for the past few days but am taking it off for bed…

plan to wear it tomorrow as well, just to be sure my wrist and arm have had a good rest…

will need to pay attention over the next while to be sure it doesn’t progress…

today we were able to sleep in… lovely…

I was up fairly early and had tea outside as I was waiting for the crew to wake up…

eventually we had pancakes – regular for the boys and potato for us… along with some breakfast sausages…

a few jobs around the site and everyone else went to the beach…

I read and napped while they were gone… once they were back we walked around the campground checking out the various sites and then went for ice cream…

we had supper together and then my daughter headed back to the city…

we have prepared a little nest in the boat and are hoping to watch the meteor shower, if we can stay awake…

Academy Awards, big girl pants, chicken, comfort, dumplings, mom, recipe, simmering, smell

decided this morning to make chicken and dumplings for supper…

daughter isn’t feeling well so they didn’t come for dinner…

I think what I like about this meal is that it takes a while to make, but most of the time it is simmering on the stove so you don’t have to work away for hours, but that is what makes it comfort food for me… and the smell is delicious throughout the house…

I put chicken legs and thighs in a large pot with onion, celery, carrots with salt, pepper, bay leaves and water… brought it to a boil and then turned it down to simmer for a number of hours…

then I strained it, and while the chicken cooled down, put chopped carrots, peas, corn and barley into the broth…

took the meat off the bone and slid it back into the pot…

left it to simmer for awhile and then made dumplings using my mom’s recipe… today I included cilantro…

simmered for another half hour and then enjoyed it…

scrumptious…

was careful with my food intake earlier in the day so that I could have two helpings…

now to watch the Academy Awards…

big girl pants, chicken souo, dumplings, learning, mom, recipe, tradition

today at lunch I enjoyed some of the zucchini basil soup I made on Saturday… it was delicious and a lovely shade of green…

I had turned down a sandwich from a local deli because I knew I was having dumplings for my supper which meant I couldn’t have any bread during the day…

while we were eating we talked about dumplings…

for dinner I was planning on chicken soup with dumplings… made the base last night and tonight skimmed the fat and added in the barley… usually it has peas, potatoes, corn and carrots, but none of those are on my good for me to eat list…

the dumpling recipe is one of the few I have from my mom… we always had them, whenever there was chicken soup…

someone mentioned that they never had dumplings… it wasn’t a tradition in their household…

always interesting to me what items were traditional in different people’s homes… I just assumed that everyone ate dumplings with chicken soup, lol…

nowadays when I make the dumpling recipe I cut it in half so that I am not tempted to eat more than I should… well, probably I shouldn’t eat any…

my learning today is that you can’t use the full amount of liquid with half of the dry ingredients in a recipe, lol…

looked a little beige but tasted good enough for me to eat two bowls full…

it’s a great tradition in my life…

cancer, cold turkey, George, leaving, mom, palliative care, valium

had a conversation recently with someone about my mom…

we weren’t very close as I grew up… she spent a lot of time in hospital and was on Valium for years which made her confused and disconnected…

she decided to stop taking the drugs when I was about sixteen and she quit cold turkey… not the way most people would stop, but she had made up her mind… it made a huge difference for all of us…

my dad died when the girls were eight and ten, and within months she was sick… eventually they discovered esophageal cancer and moved her to a palliative care facility which was across town from where she, and we, lived…

for four months I spent every day with her… we had the chance to work through all our differences and become good friends… at that time I was a stay-at-home mom and so was able to spend the time…

it was horrible and wonderful… not often does the opportunity come to spend such quality time with another person…

dying slowly is hard on everyone, the person who is dying and all those connected with them… it was a privilege to take that journey with her and know that we had sorted through all our difficulties… there was nothing left unsaid…

over the years George and I have supported a number of other family and friends as they left us slowly and as difficult as his death was, I was thankful that he didn’t go through days, weeks, months of pain and suffering…

if I think back, I can remember the last day, when I climbed into her bed and held her during the last hours… but mainly I remember the good times and how much she loved our girls…

she would have loved all our boys, old and young…

dinner and decorating, grandma, love, memories, mom, ornaments, recipe, sugar cookies, traditions

had a lovely evening out the other night… was invited for dinner and decorating with a young friend whose partner works away… we had a wonderful time decorating the tree and a few other spots in the living room, between snacks, dinner, and drinks… it is always fun to see what others have for decorations and learn traditions they follow…

tree once we were done...

tree once we were done…

it reminded me of all the years where the girls and I would prepare ornaments to hang on the tree, which we would then give to guests as they left our home… we made a wide variety of things over the years, often using cookie cutters and play dough, cinnamon and applesauce, or actual sugar cookies that we would recommend not be eaten… at some point I got kind of lazy and began hanging candy canes, which would then be offered to guests as they left…

I brought a few sugar cookies that I had made and she was commenting on how wonderful they tasted… I can’t even think how many I have made, not so much recently, but over the years while the girls were in school, every occasion meant that sugar cookies would be taken to their classrooms… and later for office functions or gatherings that I was attending…

Crystal was telling me she gets lots of compliments when she makes them as well…

the recipe was my Mom’s or maybe even my Grandma’s, I can’t remember… I’m not sure if it is the recipe, or the love that gets baked into them that makes them taste so delicious…
