yesterday I had a nice haul of veggies in the garden…
the cukes all have an odd shape but are tasty…
usually I’ve only planted a few tomatoes and the odd pepper, so I’m rather pleased with this year’s veggie garden…

a few days ago, I spent the day in the house, other than a few short walks around the garden when it wasn’t raining…
I was happy to find one of the tomatoes starting to turn colour… there are a lot, so it is going to be fun to snack on them as they ripen…
the water lily opened again, even in the rain… I took this picture from upstairs…
and I brought in the Mick’s pepper dahlia bloom to enjoy inside…
seemed odd to not be outside much… but, every time I stepped out the door it was spitting…

planted the first of the seeds… spent time one day getting the containers set up… most of them have lids so they will be like little greenhouses…
used a couple of egg cartons for the grape tomatoes…
last year I popped some tiny wrinkled tomatoes into a bit of soil and they did very well, so I have decided to try again this year;-)…
I have learned to be ruthless and will remove some from each container once they start growing…

on Saturday my neighbours gave me a bagful of tomatoes;-)…
since then I’ve used them sliced and in a tomato, cucumber, bocconcini, cilantro and balsamic salad…
then there was a delicious toasted tomato sandwich which reminded me of the wonderful ones that my beloved made… it took me the longest time to figure out one of the reasons they were so delicious was the huge amount of miracle whip he put on them;-)…
today I finished them up with a day-long tomato sauce with spaghetti and a chicken leg and thigh…
what a great treat…

so far, I’ve had two grape tomatoes from my plants…
I started these in the house in a cardboard egg carton from wrinkled grape tomatoes that weren’t good enough to eat, lol…
rather pleased with the result…
also finally have one of the vine tomatoes starting… I found the seeds for these in a pile of items from our 2013 Alaska trip… wasn’t sure they would still be good;-)…
not sure how big this one will get, but happy to check daily;-)…

my daughter brought me Roma tomatoes from her garden on Sunday and I finally put them on a plate and took some to work to share while they are at their best…
had a few with my lunch… they went well with the zuchinni basil soup…
my colleagues enjoyed them too…
sliced some on the mandolin – without cutting any of my appendages – and added them to the pita pizza for my supper…
included the last of my basil, some pistachios, and Brie cheese… and a few radishes on the side to get my veggie quotient… delicious…
have to remember not to eat too many tomatoes… although they are delicious, they are also filled with sugar…
the mandevilla still seems very happy… can’t even count the blooms…

spent a very quiet day… well, I was quiet but not so much the air around me, lol…
the birds took turns in the garden…
three crows were on the roof of the house for a long time this morning while chickadees flitted back and forth between the feeders and cedars… both of these groups were vying to be the loudest, couldn’t decide who won…
I was busy checking out the tomatoes…
the cherry tomato plant is dripping with fruit, although they haven’t started to turn colour just yet…
but the bigger ones are starting to change… woo hoo… soon there will be some yummy eating going on…
can hardly wait… then the chickadees and crows were gone…
a bit later the sparrows came to the garden… they ate at all three feeders, flitted from tree to tree, had drinks in the pond and baths by the waterfall…
the pond looks so great with the rocks and plants in just the right places…
love the purple flowers on this little plant that is floating in an island…
read, watched and listened to the visitors and the waterfall, ate and napped… even got in some time on the treadmill…
later in the afternoon the rain started and the sound of it hitting the windows was rather peaceful…
haven’t spoken a word today, but have done lots of listening;-)…

was rather proud of myself tonight… instead of tossing some overripe grape tomatoes I made sauce for whole wheat pasta… not that long ago I would have thrown them out and certainly wouldn’t have eaten whole wheat pasta, lol…
made it up as I went along with the tomatoes, herbs, garlic, and some leftover mozzarella cheese… very tasty…
while it was cooking, I looked out into the backyard and saw the solar lights glowing under the snow… so cute…
was a bit surprised because the sun wasn’t out very much today… took the boys to the zoo this afternoon and there wasn’t any sun shining the entire time we were there… saw lots of wolves and bears and spotted a new heavy horse…
even put its head over the fence so I could get a good shot…
earlier my son-in-law had fixed one of the timers for a light in the living room… somehow we had pushed a button and the light just stayed on, so I’d been turning it on and off manually…
happily it is now working perfectly…
the other light in the corner, along with the silver trees, comes on and turns off exactly on schedule…
just love it when things work as they’re supposed to…
wish I could figure out how to put the light on the fish tank on a timer, lol..

too cold for the morning glories today… but it was beautiful when I left the office… sun was shining and it was around 20 Celsius… very nice after a week of rather chilly temperatures…
the tomatoes were looking rather sad, so I took them off the vine… certainly didn’t get as many as usual…
was very happy to spend a couple of hours with my BS friends… it is always great to be together and we haven’t met for a while – I was away and then there were scheduling conflicts… these women have been my companions for over two decades… being with them provides comfort and balance in my life…

last night I watered the garden while waiting for supper…
the hydrangeas all have flowers and my daughter is rather jealous… hers are not doing anything…
am quite excited with the tomatoes which are turning colour…
still really happy with my shrinking hose as my hands stay clean and my arms aren’t worn out from watering the baskets…
the planters at the front door look great…
considering my lack of attention to the garden, it really is amazing how well it is doing…
