today, as we were heading out to do a few errands, the doorknob came off in my grandson’s hand as he was locking the door…

so, besides the planned errands, we also went to Home Depot to get a new handle for the door…

I was very happy that this happened when he was home as I wasn’t sure that I could fix it…

once we returned home, my fancy screwdriver came out, pieces were removed from the door…

the new pieces were installed…

and voila, a beautiful new handle on the door…

it feels much sturdier, and although the handle is a bit stiff, I think the door is closing and locking better;-)…

this morning the mandevilla and Japanese Maple made their annual hiatus to the garden…

the mandevilla is probably four or five years old… it started out on the deck and has come in each fall and lived over the winter in the living room like any other houseplant… it has grown quite tall, but always loses a ton of leaves so I spent time pulling off many brown crispy dead bits, lol… it now has a very tall obelisk in the pot and most of the growth is at the top… looks good now that it is cleaned up…

the Japanese Maple travelled by car from Vancouver island about ten years ago, when it made the trip with the kids as they moved from Courtenay to Ottawa, with a short visit here on their way… it had done well over that time but hasn’t grown much… today I repotted it in a bigger container with some fresh soil… hope it likes it;-)…

they will be in the shade for a few days and then move to their summer locations…

spent some time topping up all three fish tanks…

the water is evaporating at a fast rate…

it seems like only a week ago that I had added a bit of water to each of them…

I guess the good news is that the humidity level in the house is good, lol… and the pumps are much quieter the higher the water level;-)…

first thing I did on Thursday was put the heart wreath on the front door…

a little later, I brought down the rest of the love items and set them around the house…

that was fun;-)…

February is Heart and Stroke month and a time when I make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of my beloved and those who have been touched by heart disease…

when we were in the garden on Sunday, we removed a ton of leaves from the pond… always makes me think of the lovely neighbours we have had over the years, being as how the tree that sheds those leaves is located in their yard, lol…

there were still numerous ones left, but we were able to dig down past them and catch three fish to bring into the house…

I wanted to do a bit of a test in the biggest tank to be sure that the water was safe for them…

after they acclimatized to the house temperature they made it into their condo…

so far they seem happy and healthy;-)…

as it is getting later in the season, the mandevilla got moved into the garage and sprayed down with homemade insecticide to discourage any bugs from getting into the house…

it is sad, as it is currently blooming like crazy… and I know that most of the buds will drop off once it is in the house, sigh…

it stayed out for a few days… usually you put the plant in a bag, but clearly, this one is a bit too large for that option, so hoping it is less likely there are bugs in the garage than in the garden…

brought it in and tried a few spots in the living room before finding just the right one, hopefully…

I trimmed a considerable amount from the top and added a plant light…

I guess we will see how it does;-)…

today I had another wonderful example of great use of technology…

I always think of how privileged I am that I am able to have someone come and clean for me…

the two cleaners arrived right on time and asked me to wait when I started to speak to them about what needed to be done… I was told “no English”…

once they had all their equipment inside, one of them got out their phone and went to Google Translate… then they spoke, I read, I spoke, they read…

how cool is that… they were a husband and wife who came here from Ukraine, where they had been accountants…

it was lovely that we could communicate so well…

moved the hibiscus into the garage and sprayed it down with homemade insecticide…

will leave it there for a few days before bringing it into the house…

I am sure that it will drop most of its leaves, as already, many have turned yellow… but that feels fairly normal for it…

hopefully, the few buds that are on it will bloom in the house…

fingers crossed;-)…

we moved into this house in September of 1973… 50 years ago:-)…

this is rather astonishing to me, lol…

early on, there was a lot of red everywhere, inside and out… then we went to some light pink, gray, and finally to touches of purple…

the garden started out as a grassed square, then a space for a kid swing set, a small pool, a giant sandbox, a two story playhouse, and then plants and ponds…

so many changes, so many memories;-)…

what a life…

last night I ran around the house gathering all the boxes for a Big Brothers Big Sisters pickup today…

had all the boxes in the dining room and marked as required…

set the alarm to be sure I was up at 7:30 to put the boxes on the front steps…

made sure they were all on the steps before 8 but then when the boxes weren’t picked up by noon, I went back and reread the email from them…

apparently they are coming next Friday, not today… oops…

so I went out and brought all the boxes back in, lol…
