made chicken soup the other day… cold outside and huge snowflakes were falling… seemed like just the thing to do…

although I could use the Instant Pot, I do it the old-fashioned way… I enjoy the aroma as it simmers away on the stove…

I like the time it takes to cool the chicken down and then separate the meat from the bones, adding in the barley, potatoes and other veggies and putting it back on to simmer…

once it was finished I packaged it up and with the last bit in the pot added dumplings for my supper…

good use of the day and delicious…

the kids came over on Tuesday to do some shovelling…

I am usually able to do the sidewalks and decks, but there is so much snow out there now that I can’t toss the snow high enough to get over the drifts, lol…

the driveway got cleared, which was nice, although as I don’t go anywhere, that isn’t so important these days…

part of the job was to level the tops of some of the piles in the back so I can manage again without the snow sliding back to where I had moved it from…

they were also able to widen the space where the windrow was at the front… it is much easier to walk to the front door now…

blessed to have the help;-)…

a while ago my grandson took a few of my knives to sharpen for me…

they were from the WearEver collection that had belonged to my parents…

recently he dropped them back off… he had sharpened them and cleaned and oiled the one with a wooden handle…

today, I finally used a couple of them…

they were so sharp and cut beautifully… reminded me how good sharp knives are, lol…

so happy to have my Friday night dinner delivered from ModernPlate… they produced weekly meals between November, 2020 and May, 2021…

at that time they ended the Friday night meals, so I was pleased (for me) to see that it was back, but sorry (for them) that we’ve come back to this…

I also ordered a spinach salad with feta, fennel, seeds and pecans, which I had for lunch… it was very tasty…

the dinner is for two so I get at least two meals from it… this one was pork loin with smashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts…

and then there was dessert;-)… kept half of one piece of the cranberry and orange sticky toffee pudding…and sent the rest home with my grandson… which was a good plan, because I would have eaten more if it was here, lol…

such a treat to have meals made for me… and they are always delicious…

got a text from my grandson advising he would be dropping a few things off for me today… he was supposed to let me know the day before he was coming, lol…

I had promised to make red curry lentils so I got started…

usually I put the uncooked lentils into the sauce to cook slowly as they simmer, but as I wanted to be sure they were cooked in time, I did them separately…

while the sauce and lentils were cooking, I made the rice in the Instant Pot…

felt a little more rushed than normal, but I had everything cooked and in containers in about an hour…

he picked the containers up along with some other treats when he dropped off items he had collected for me;-)…

he also brought a couple of gifts from my younger grandsons… an Indigo gift card and a monopod for my camera;-)…

lovely to get a few late gifts…

so excited to get an electric toothbrush for Christmas… I’ve been wanting one for a number of years, but just hadn’t gotten around to doing anything about it…

once I figured out how to get it put together, I sat it on the edge of the sink and plugged it in…

it took quite awhile to charge, but once it was done I unplugged it and put the charger away… I didn’t want it sitting so close to the water…

eventually I figured out that it could sit in the cabinet to charge, so that is what I did when it needed to be recharged… feels safer as it charges, without being near the water;-)…

once fully charged, I will move the charger back under the sink…

for the first time since my beloved left me, I was able to change a lightbulb in the bathroom…

doesn’t sound like much, but I have tried numerous times without success and had to call in the cavalry to fix the problem…

but, I did it;-)…

felt like one of those big girl pants moments…

sucked…

very happy that the pump on the small fish tank is working once again…

had to have it replaced as it just stopped a week or so ago…

I was able to use the old (and rather large) pump while waiting for the replacement…

happily, no fish were sucked up into the much larger and stronger system…

they are happy and enjoying the better light, as the big pump blocked a lot…

and I can see them much better;-)…

had a lovely New Year’s day…

I watched the Rose Parade which was something we’ve done with my parents for years…

dear friends stopped by to first-foot me… and brought the usual coal, orange, cookies, alcohol, with a beautiful card… and a gorgeous bouquet of orchids and allium… my bouquet from last week is just on its last legs so the timing was perfect…

orchids are one of my favourites and allium was one of my beloved’s…

after that, I made a delicious steak and lobster meal for my lunch… it is usually the meal for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day dinner…

I decided on lunch so the day would be easier… and to broil instead of barbecue as it was so cold out…

it turned out delicious and then I spent the day watching movies…

and carrying the flowers from room to room, lol…

my middle grandson arrived yesterday afternoon to do some shovelling…

he made a path from the house to the garage… and then to the back lane… all around the hot tub… and the top deck…

there was a lot of snow and it hadn’t been touched since Thursday…

he, of course, arrived with runners on his feet, lol… he had good gloves but his hands got cold, so for part of the job, he used grandpa’s garbage mitts that I had brought outside…

the driveway got a quick shovel as well as the sidewalks… they had been shovelled and snow blowed twice by the neighbour…
