this picture reminds me of the rush you get when you meet one of the influential people who have or will change your life in some way…

Dale Chihuly has been one such influence for me… I was introduced to his art a number of years ago and been a fan since that time… wanting to see his art has encouraged me to step out of my box and visit places I couldn’t have imagined and experience things in a new way…

I can still feel the thrill of hearing his voice in the building and realizing that he was there in person and it wasn’t a video or recording…

it was such a pleasure to meet and talk with him at Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle…

sun shone all day which is great… Saturday is my rest day and I try not to leave the house…

had a fun time changing out the drawer in the living room coffee table…

put away all of the pictures of beautiful Chihuly installations and family photos… brought back some lovely memories of our meeting with him in Seattle… like shaking the hand of a rock star;-)…

pulled out the box filled with sea shells and used them to fill the four quadrants… I remember how excited I was to find this table at IKEA that the shells could go into…

of course, I’ve lost two different batches of shells since then, lol…

but it looks lovely and beach-y...

took this picture of the April page on my Chihuly calendar…

when I turned to this page it reminded me of the wonderful installation at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and how much fun we had there…

the other place where there was a fabulous installation of the floats was at Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle… many floats were placed inside a row boat, just sitting on the floor in a huge empty room… very cool…

funny where a picture can take you…

lovely morning spent going through my new Chihuly book admiring all the gorgeous glass chandeliers and remembering my visits to Seattle and Atlanta…

of all the installations I always lean toward the blue ones… although this mauve one kind of caught my eye…

I’ve followed his work for many years, after being introduced to it by my older daughter…

my first live view of his work was in Seattle on our way home from our Alaskan cruise… it was a stellar way to end the trip and we actually met Dale while we were wandering around Chihuly Garden and Glass…

this past June we went to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for a Chihuly exhibition… my favourite there was the boat and spheres with this goddess…

the book was a lovely treat from a friend who had recently been to a city that had some Chihuly installations and while she was there she had the chance to see a few of the pieces as well…

if you have the opportunity to see any of his work in person I strongly recommend you take the time to check it out…

amazing…

big girl pants, Chihuly, excited, homemade, macaroni, memories, Seattle, unforgettable, white sauce

yesterday my daughter in Ottawa asked for my recipe for homemade macaroni and cheese…

it is one of her favourites and we didn’t have an opportunity to have it while they were home…

it is in a duo tang from high school home ec class that I keep on the shelf in the kitchen with my other cookbooks…

excited that she wanted to make it… came out very nice and they enjoyed it…

the white sauce in that recipe is my go to… I can’t even think how many times I’ve made it for various dishes… best thing I ever learned in home economics…

the most exciting thing today was getting to turn the calendar to January…

I purchased this calendar in August and have been waiting to get to use it… the last one I had was for 2014 and I didn’t open it until January only to discover that it had the previous November and December included… was so excited that this one would have the same thing…

but it didn’t… been waiting since September to get to a full size calendar…

I just love Dale Chihuly’s work… one of the most memorable moments for me was standing in Chihuly Garden and Glass at the base of the Seattle Space Needle and hearing his voice as he walked into the room we were in… to listen as he answered students’ questions and then get a picture with him… was like meeting a rock star…

funny what makes an unforgettable memory…

big girl pants, calendar, Chihuly, Seattle

when we were in Seattle in 2013, I got this amazing calendar which I put away until January 2014, without losing it, lol…

I have enjoyed it every day as I would wander past it… it reminded me of the spectacular day we met Dale Chihuly at Chihuly Garden and Glass…

this is the last month… I am wondering about whether I can order another one for 2015 on line…

I will never forget the day we spent amongst all of the amazing glass sculptures… he really is a genius…

still a bit star struck…

Alaska, beloved, blogging, Christmas, Christmas project, cleaned aquarium, George, gift, hand-made gift, lots of important changes, Mexico, one step at a time, Seattle, year of blogs

well, a year ago today I wrote my first blog… the time has both flown past and taken forever, lol…

I’ve posted nearly every day since then… lots of things have taken place over this year…

commemorated George’s birthday for the first time without him… first Christmas without George and with Cyndi and Ron not coming home… took my kids to Mexico for a winter vacation… went on an Alaskan cruise… had two unforgettable days in Seattle… spent some wonderful time on Vancouver Island… had the pond rebuilt… spent some great time in/on the water over the summer… celebrated Cyndi and Ron’s trip through Winnipeg with a fabulous Champagne Bubble Party…

today I finished the Christmas project I’ve been working on with help from a lovely young woman at a local store… then Crystal and all the boys came over early and helped me with a number of jobs around the house… we put up and decorated some small trees, and put up the snow people…

cleaaning the aquarium... took 4 boys to get the job done...

cleaaning the aquarium… took 4 boys to get the job done…

finally, the boys changed the water in the aquarium and cleaned the pump… oh my, it was dirty… George would not be pleased with me, lol… still need to get a new filter but it is already looking much better…

for the last few weeks I have been struggling much more with the loss of my beloved, but today I may have turned the corner…

I’ve been working on a small gift for family and friends… George and I often produced hand-made gifts over the years… we would design them together, and he would usually be the one to make them… I decided to do one this year and enjoyed the process, but was also missing his input… the project is complete and may have helped me realize that he was with me throughout the process…

I have been wearing those big girl pants more and more and some days they fit very nicely… other days they feel enormous…

I will continue to take one step at a time on this new journey…

recently my daughter made a day trip to Montreal to see Dale Chihuly’s art installations at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal, the first major Canadian museum show of his work…

she enjoyed the trip and the amazing art… she had introduced me to his work years ago, and I have read books and watched a number of TV shows about him and the amazing installations he has produced over the years… so, it was a must for us to see some of his work when we had the opportunity…

made me look back at the pictures we took when we went to Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle following our cruise to Alaska… seeing it in person made all the previous things I’d seen and read about pale by comparison…

my favourite piece of all the ones in the exhibition...

we spent an entire morning wandering around the space… must give kudos to Ron, who wasn’t nearly as taken by it all as we were, but he patiently followed us as we went back and forth throughout the space, lol… we were so awed by the beauty and magnitude of the work he and his many colleagues put into the installations…

one small area of the garden...

it was a beautiful day and we spent as much time in the garden as we did in the building…

the most exciting thing was that we got to meet him, get our pictures taken with him and talk a bit about his work… he was in town for a surprise birthday visit to one of his collectors and stopped by to speak with some school kids who were taking a tour…

he answered questions and then agreed to having his photo taken with individuals and chat with them… we were ecstatic to have the opportunity to see and speak with him in person… felt like meeting a rock star…

one of the great things they do is have photographers walking around the building and garden who take your picture and give you a little card… you take the card to a machine, enter your email address and the picture goes directly to you… and it is all free… this was particularly wonderful as we had paid dearly for any photos taken on the ship, lol…

if you are in Seattle, make the time to visit Chihuly Garden and Glass… it is located at the base of the Space Needle and will absolutely blow your mind…

blowing glass, Dale Chihuly, float, Seattle, Seattle Glass Blowing Studio and Gallery

yesterday my parcel arrived from the Seattle Glass Blowing Studio and Gallery… we spent a wonderful hour there after the cruise where I made a float and Cyndi made a beautiful glass bowl…

I had been blown away by the gorgeous Chihuly Garden and Glass, and had great fun making my piece… Ron came along and took pictures while we worked… the three below were taken on my iPhone by Cyndi…

really difficult to blow the bubble and you need excellent teamwork...

when we talked with Dale Chihuly he said he had 90 people on his team and after making one little float I can see how you could use many hands…

our instructor was excellent…

flattening the bottom of the float...

they put the pieces into a kiln where the temperature comes down slowly over 24 hours so we didn’t get to see the final product until it arrived…

my outfit is particularly lovely as they recommended wearing cotton clothing… I found these pants with crabs on them the day before and as they were way too long we cut them off and I rolled them up…

Cyndi and Crystal were texting back and forth about how embarrassed they were that I was going out in public dressed in such a fashion, lol…

while at the Glass Blowing Studio I splurged and bought a stunning bowl…

my float looks pretty good… it is round and purple and will go into the pond…

what more could a person want, lol…
