well, the boys came over this morning and helped me put the garden to bed…

we managed about an hour of work before everyone was done, but accomplished quite a bit… removed plants, mowed grass, put away pots and furniture…

then we walked to the bakery and grocery store to get supplies for making grilled cheese sandwiches… we had to stop at a local park where the boys remembered grandpa playing in this red car with them… and hearing the story of how mommy’s tooth was chipped here…

the older one prepared the sandwiches while the youngest rested from all that walking, lol…

next we headed over to Assiniboine Park Zoo to check out the animals… climbed towers, checked out bugs, looked for polar bears, made a drink combining a slushy with an ice cream cone and ran through a hay bale maze…

pretty nice way to spend this beautiful fall day…

been thinking of what a great day we had on Sunday…

this picture is an example of the fun that filled the day… the daddy was photobombing a picture…

it is quite wonderful when the stars align and everyone is happy and cooperative…

the sun shone and our group walked and ran and jumped… who knew how much fun you could have in a skate park without a skateboard, lol…

I was especially happy when we ended up at The Forks because I’d been wanting to have a photo with the Winnipeg sign…

when I was visiting my daughter in Ontario we went and had photos taken at a variety of signs… two different Ottawa ones and then at the Canada 150 sign… in Kingston, we took night shots and daytime ones, at the Kingston sign… over the summer I’d taken a few pics at the Canada 150 sign at Assiniboine Park…

so it really seemed important to get one here…

today I applied for a new passport… had printed off the documents ahead of time and was in and out of their office in about six minutes…

this is what they do to expired passports…

I had been dropped off, and after I was done, I walked back to the office in the lovely fall sunshine…

as I walked along I was remembering when I got my first passport…

it was about six months after George died and I had decided to take all the kids on a vacation so had to go and get a passport… I had never had one before…

it was odd preparing the paperwork and going through the process required to find individuals to act as references, having a photo taken and then taking in the paperwork… the kind of thing we would have done together…

five years have passed since that day at the passport office… hard to believe that my beloved has been gone for five years, six months and twenty-seven days…

loved this view of the moon over the flag as I was waiting to cross the street…

yesterday I spent time setting the table for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving dinner with my Winnipeg kids…

doing these small tasks while thinking of so many previous Thanksgivings brought to mind how George and I would work as a team to get the house and dinner ready for friends and family…

his job was to grocery shop and get the house organized… that could be tidying or cleaning or reorganizing the hall closet, depending on what he felt was most important… and often, to make a pie…

my job was to prep and cook the meal…

now I get to shop, tidy and everything else… the good news is that someone comes in now and again to clean so I don’t have to do that piece…

I have worked out a system where I do bits and pieces of the prep work over a few days before the special day so that I don’t feel exhausted…

yesterday I even made an apple pie…

today I started my day with a walk to and around the Park…

it was cool and windy… spent quite a bit of time with the geese… still trying to get some good shots of them taking off and landing…

once home I made stuffing, cranberry sauce, peeled and cooked turnip, prepped potatoes, green beans and cauliflower… also cooked the ham and started pea soup…

sounds like a lot, but fit in naps and tv too;-)… there is something holy about preparing space and food for others…

lots of memories as I moved through the day, but this time they are happy, not sad… a step forward…

appointment, big girl pants, bruise, photos, pressure, sky, sunrise, trees, walk, widow

had some fun with my photos this morning…

needed to get my blood work done for my next doctor’s appointment and took a few pictures of the sunrise as I parked the car…

I always park a good distance from wherever I am going and then get some extra walking in so there is less pressure to get enough exercise…

spotted this lovely tree changing colour as I walked along…

the walk to and from the clinic was very nice on this beautiful day…

the final reminder of my day was this bruise from the blood work…

the technicians suggest that the longer you keep pressure on the spot where the needle was inserted, the smaller the bruise will be…

had a spectacular Friday off…

woke up later than normal (which in itself, is a treat) to sunshine and warm temperatures…

and lots of blooming flowers… what a treat…

out for a walk around the English and Leo Mol Gardens…

must have spent ten minutes watching all the painted ladies flitting about in the sunlight…

then lunch at The Park Cafe with a special friend and her baby…

and that was just the morning;-)…

one of my favourites from the garden this morning… I do love purple, and morning glories…

as I was leaving the office took a few shots of the sky… it had been looking very odd for a good portion of the afternoon… possibly from the smoke from fires…

as I was walking towards the house took the picture of the sun…

it was international chocolate day I decided on chips and chocolate for a snack after work;-)…

2017 Ottawa day 7, Bier Markt, bus, chocolate, Kontinuum, leaves, light, Ottawa, oysters, Parliament, Technology, tourist, vacation, walk

took the bus, on my own, to meet my daughter after she got off work…

we had lunch at Bier Markt... and I tried oysters again… they were yummy, who knew…

then we went to see Kontinuum… it is a free light show in the new subway… it was quite neat…

afterwards we walked over to the Parliament buildings and took a few tourist-y shots…

the bus from her house to downtown was just an ordinary one, but on our way home we got on a bendy bus… yay…

took a few pictures of trees and leaves on our walk from the bus to the house… the maple leaves are beginning to change colour… very pretty…

after supper we did a small 100% cacao chocolate tasting…

and ended with the cutest little Brix bar which is made to slide over a wine bottle…

2017 Ottawa day 5, big girl pants, boat, family, Kingston, leaves, locks, memories, moments, paddle boarding, selfie, walk, weather, widow

started our day early in Kingston with a trip to the Base beach to do some stand up paddle boarding… it was a gorgeous morning, warm but breezy…

my daughter got out onto the water but realized it was too windy so we packed the stuff up… it is a lovely beach with many sailboats at the marina…

on our way home we stopped and checked out a couple of trails…

the leaves and acorns were beautiful…

then it was time for lunch, farewells and the drive back to Ottawa… on the way we took a few detours to find some possible paddle boarding sites…

we came across a boat going through the locks at one spot and had fun watching the process…

continue to work on my selfie skills, and as one woman put it while we were trying to get just the right one – it is harder than it looks, lol…

rained for about the last half hour of our drive, then stopped for just long enough to unload the car…

another fun filled day… now I am tired and ready for bed…

2017 Ottawa Day 1, big girl pants, cake, chocolate, family, iPhone, memories, travel, vacation, walk, widow

well, today I’ve travelled in cars, planes, boats and on foot… all of it very good…

on my flight I watched a movie through WestJet Connect… first time I’ve used Connect and also the first time I’ve watched a movie on my phone… sadly the flight ended before the movie… apparently you can purchase internet access… might have to try that another time…

was picked up at the airport and we went to visit all the Ottawa signs and in the process wandered through Byward Market… just love how beautifully the produce is set out…

first actual stop was for a Beavertail… we shared a garlic and cheese one… yum…

then stopped and took pictures at every Ottawa sign downtown, lol…

walked over the bridge to see MosaiCanada which was very cool…

I will post more pictures of that later…

took a water taxi back to the Locks and walked along Sparks Street till we came across Bier Markt where we enjoyed a delicious dinner of mussels, duck wings and a Brussels sprout and kale salad…

back home for tea and a sliver of Baked Expectations Deadly Chocolate Mousse which I brought from Winnipeg…

now to bed…
